In the heart of Bangkok, there is a road named Dinsor Road which translates to Pencil Road.
00:05
But why is it called that? Located in Panakorn, near the popular Khao San Road,
00:11
Dinsor Road is an important route and a starting point of Thailand's Kilometer Zero.
00:15
The road was built during the era of King Rama V but its name dates back to the Ayutthaya period.
00:21
People in this area were known for making pencils and paper, once earning it the name
00:27
Dinsor Forest. Even in the early Lattanakosin period, around 100 years ago, pencil making
00:33
remained a key occupation and the area was also called Dinsor Dristic or Dinsor House.
00:39
In 1898, a road was constructed to expand the Panakorn traffic network and it was officially
00:45
named Thanot Dinsor or Dinsor Road. Today, the pencil-making trade has sadly disappeared,
00:50
but its name lives on.
