Did you know that Wat Arun Pagodas are decorated with Chinese porcelain?
00:04
One of the most unique temples in Bangkok is surely Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn.
00:08
And on the famous pagodas or Prang of Wat Arun,
00:12
there are thousands of colorful porcelain and glasses in Chinese style.
00:16
Decorating Thai architecture with Chinese porcelain wasn't a new thing.
00:19
There was a record in 1685 by a friend of peace, Nicola Chavez,
00:24
that Ayutthaya imported a great amount of chinaware straight from China.
00:27
The importation continued and happened in Ratanakosin time too.
00:31
The chinaware traveled on junk ships from China to be on Ayutthaya statues
00:37
as pieces of porcelain and glasses.
00:39
Later, a whole piece was set to decorate the architecture as well
00:42
and even modified into different shapes.
00:45
From 2013 to 2017, Wat Arun Pagodas went through a big restoration
00:50
in which many new porcelain were added among the old ones.
00:54
The restoration led to widely public criticism.
00:57
