Another snowstorm on the way to the mid-Atlantic

After snow sweeps through recently flooded areas of Kentucky and Tennessee, it's expected to slam Virginia and North Carolina.

00:00A lot's going on as the storm moves east.

00:02Yeah, we're talking about the same

00:03kinds of impacts accumulating snowfall,

00:05accumulating ice that's going to

00:07create some dangerous situations,

00:08and we already have several alerts issued.

00:10Some of these starting to go into effect.

00:12Others not going into into effect

00:14until the early morning hours,

00:15but winter weather advisories,

00:17winter storm warnings in the dark

00:18blue and the green that you see here.

00:20These are flood warnings and you'll notice,

00:23like for example,

00:23this is along the Ohio River.

00:25A lot of these are along waterways

00:27where there are concerns about

00:29flooding because especially some of

00:31these areas like Kentucky, Tennessee,

00:32saw significant rainfall and

00:33flooding over the weekend,

00:34and now we're adding precipitation on to that.

00:37Here's the overall footprint of the storm.

00:39All of the areas that are set to be impacted.

00:41So let's break down exactly what to expect.

00:44First of all,

00:45some of the snow totals are not

00:47going to be very significant,

00:48but the rates 1 to 2 inches per hour.

00:51At times that quickly deteriorates

00:53things like road conditions.

00:54And then of course,

00:55with the ice we're talking difficult

00:57travel and even power outages.

00:58In some areas and impacts to some

01:00major highways right around the time

01:02when you're driving to work or school.

01:03I-64 I-81 I-95 and then of course we have

01:06the cold air that comes in behind the storm.

01:08So future radar.

01:09We're going to time this out and

01:11give you an idea of exactly what to

01:13expect so that you can plan ahead here.

01:15First 6 AM Wednesday we're moving

01:17into Kentucky, West Virginia,

01:18Tennessee.

01:18Again,

01:19this coincides with kind of morning

01:20commute times as we continue out

01:22through the day by the time we get

01:24to the evening hours, North Carolina.

01:26That's where really the biggest

01:27concern is as far as impacts for

01:29your evening commute 5 PM Wednesday.

01:31A lot of pink there.

01:32That means freezing rain accumulating

01:34on the road there.

01:35That is not a good situation.

01:36Definitely try to plan ahead if you can

01:39maybe leave work a little bit early,

01:40or at least give yourself extra

01:42time to get where you need to go.

01:44Now the other thing you'll notice we

01:46had two areas of low pressure here,

01:48but this storm set up so we have

01:50this next area of snow that develops.

01:52That's going to bring accumulating

01:53snowfall a little bit further North here.

01:55So then we have snow moving in

01:56Thursday morning to Pittsburgh DC,

01:58and then we move up the coast

02:00towards New York and Boston.

02:01Some areas only getting a coding to an inch.

02:04Other areas getting a little bit

02:06more accumulation in places like

02:07Cape Cod for example.

02:09Overall,

02:09we're looking at 6 to 12 inches

02:11of snowfall for Richmond.

02:12That's where our higher snow totals there.

02:15Highlighted in the darkest blue shade.
