Disruptive snow returns to the I-95 corridor

Heavy snow is beginning in the D.C. metro area as a major snowstorm strikes the mid-Atlantic on Feb. 11.

00:00help us break down the city by city impacts along I-95 and beyond. We're

00:04joined now by AccuWeather meteorologist and Northeast expert Dave Dombeck. So

00:08Dave, there's no better man than you to break down this city by city impacts

00:13here. DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. So let's begin with DC here. We've been

00:20into it here for an hour or two. You've seen the visibility dropping here. Mm-hmm.

00:23Yeah, and I think you're gonna see a rapidly deteriorating conditions there,

00:27Jeff. It's right now, as of four o'clock, you're down to 20, or no, you're down to

00:3232 degrees. Your dew point is 28, so you're probably going to drop another

00:37degree or two with the heavier snow coming in now, and of course we're

00:42getting toward the end of the day here, getting toward dark, so conditions in the

00:47DC area will rapidly deteriorate. That's not good news for the evening commuters

00:52trying to head home. Philadelphia has not started yet. They are 36 degrees with

00:58a dew point of 14, so you got a pretty big spread there, still kind of dry air

01:02holding on. We do expect the snow to get underway, the first flakes here, in the

01:07not-too-distant future, probably, I would think, by 536 o'clock or so. It's

01:12beginning to move into Philadelphia, and there, the main part of their snow

01:17will be sometime between about 7 or 8, and maybe about 1 or 2 in the morning.

01:22We're also looking at a 3 to 6 inch snowfall there, like in the DC and

01:27Baltimore area. As for who's gonna get a heavier band of snow, looks like it's

01:32gonna set up maybe just a little bit south and east of DC and Baltimore,

01:36probably into the portions of Delaware, maybe the eastern shore, maybe extreme

01:41southern Jersey. There will be some places that get as much as 6, 7, maybe 8

01:46inches down there, a narrow strip. You go farther northeast, up the I-95 corridor

01:52here to New York City, their snow is not getting in there probably till after 8

01:56or 9 p.m. A lot of dry air to overcome yet, and we are looking at lower amounts,

02:02so we have 2 to 4 inches, but really, we do like the 2 inches better than the 4,

02:07with, again, most of that coming during the overnight hours. Okay, and then that

02:12loop played out there for the next storm, which would be a little bit different,

02:14but for this first one then, Dave, we were kind of coordinating the, you know,

02:18the radar, the future radar, and the temperatures here as you were walking us

02:21through there for DC, Philadelphia, and then New York City. It's one of these

02:25years where, if you're a fan of snow and you live in southern Delaware, you've

02:29been in a sweet spot, which could be a frustrating place for the snow fans, but

02:34one aspect of this is going to involve a little bit of ice. Are we concerned about

02:38many power outages, or is this mainly a snow threat here? This is mainly a snow

02:43threat, Jeff. In fact, as you get down the coast, I think you'll get to a point

02:47where there will be some sleet, maybe south of about Lewis, Delaware, Rehoboth

02:50Beach or so. There'll be some sleet down in there, and then you get a

02:54little bit farther south, then you get too much of an ocean flow, and that'll

02:58have the temperatures above freezing, so you'll just get some rain. I think any

03:01ice will be confined to areas more farther inland, across central, maybe

03:05western Virginia, into portions of West Virginia. That might be the area where

03:09there'll be a little bit more in the way of ice, but definitely snow is the

03:13biggie with this one. Absolutely. Okay, that sounds good, Dave, and we appreciate

03:17your insight, as always. Always dialed into the big city forecast there, and

03:20again, you mentioned potential for 6 to 10, 6 to isolated, up to 12 inches out

03:26there. Who do you think is the jackpot? What's your money? Elkins, West

03:30Virginia, someplace near there again? I would put my bet on a higher elevation

03:35place, for sure. Not saying that there can't be that much in, you know, maybe

03:39somewhere in the eastern shore of Maryland or far south Jersey, but I think

03:43my bet would be on a higher elevation mountain location, like you

03:47mentioned. All right. All right, Dave, we appreciate your insight, as always.
