Finding love in the bush can be a challenge with a limited dating pool, but one young woman is taking matters into her own hands. Landline’s Courtney Wilson reports on her quest for romance in rural Australia.

00:00There are many perks to country living, but there are also some pitfalls.

00:08The long and often odd hours and the locations can make finding a significant other a little

00:15tricky.

00:16I'm full time on the family farm and I was really struggling to meet someone.

00:22I'm at uni, I'm doing agriculture and still then I hadn't met anyone, I don't go to the

00:27pub on a Friday night and I just felt like if I was struggling, surely other people are

00:33struggling as well.

00:36Twenty three year old Mia Ryan lives and works on this picturesque rural property not far

00:44from the Hunter Valley.

00:46She's a horse trainer, working mainly with warm bloods to keep them agile and in condition.

00:54It usually takes about an hour, hour and a half to get through each horse.

00:57And although not exactly long in the tooth, she didn't want to waste any more time waiting

01:02for Mr Right.

01:04So Mia decided to take matters into her own hands and with no experience at all, she set

01:10about creating a dating app specifically for farmers.

01:15Mia settled on a developer in Sydney, took a huge business loan and with the help of

01:20a coding team based in Nepal, in the space of just over three months, Mia created Howdy.

01:35It was launched in March 2024.

01:38It now has more than 10,000 downloads and a couple thousand paid subscribers online
