The Gold Coast is known for its sun and sand, but in the streets behind its golden beaches, an unlikely industry is booming. The city is pushing to support investment in the tech sector, which is growing at double the rate of the rest of the country.

00:11Ever since COVID there's been a lot of brain drain from the cities.

00:16Everyone's coming here and it's a totally different place now.

00:19Sheila Gough Kenyon's company is creating artificial intelligence tools to build spacecraft.

00:25She decided to base her business on the Gold Coast in 2023.

00:30It's a great place to build a team and it's a great place, I guess, to get the other resources, right, that you need.

00:36With its beautiful beaches and attractions, the Gold Coast is a holiday maker's hot spot.

00:42But now the tech sector is contributing almost as much to the city's economy as tourism does.

00:48It's worth about $1.4 billion to the Gold Coast economy.

00:52About 9,000 people are employed here in the tech sector.

00:57The council has worked to cement the city as a tech hub, funding this co-working space

01:02and a three month long mentoring and investment program.
