Two more storms to cause widespread impacts across the US this week

After heavy snow in the mid-Atlantic from Tuesday into Wednesday, two more storms are set to sweep across the country, with dangerous ice and snow in the Midwest, severe storms on the Gulf Coast and flooding in California.

00:00Lots of weather to get into here.

00:01This is going to be a very impactful storm,

00:03not only this next wave,

00:04but we're also talking about a third wave this week.

00:08The February frenzy that we've been talking about

00:09of snow and ice storms continues,

00:11and that Wrigley camera view

00:13is going to look a whole lot different

00:14come this time tomorrow,

00:16with a significant snowstorm on the way into Chicago area,

00:19and some other places that have not had

00:21a lot of snow yet this year.

00:22Omaha over toward Des Moines,

00:24and everywhere here in the blue with the snow,

00:27an icy mix from parts of the Ohio Valley,

00:30places up toward Indianapolis,

00:32up into portions of the interior northeast,

00:34and a soaking rain and flooding rain concerns

00:36across parts of the southeast,

00:38including the areas that were hard hit by Hurricane Helene,

00:41where additional rainfall can result in flooding concerns.

00:45All right, so looking at this map right here,

00:47this is what we're going to be primarily watching out

00:49for the highest potential of dangerous road conditions,

00:52even power outage potential.

00:54That's correct.

00:55Our biggest concern about freezing rain,

00:57not enough to create not only slippery travel on the roads,

00:59but to down trees and power lines

01:02would be in the Laurel Highlands,

01:03the highest elevations of southwestern Pennsylvania,

01:06through the high ground of western Maryland,

01:09and eastern West Virginia,

01:10down into western portions of Virginia,

01:13Roanoke, dealing with some freezing rain as we speak now,

01:16so that's going to be from the first storm,

01:19and then of course our next storm,

01:20producing those same kinds of concerns in similar areas.

01:24All right, so in addition to the freezing rain threat,

01:26there's also going to be a pretty good potential

01:28of record-breaking snowfall for some areas

01:30stretching from the High Plains all the way into New England.

01:33A big snowstorm here with the strip of six to 10 inches

01:37of snow here from the St.

01:38Lourdes Valley all the way southwestward

01:41through portions of the Great Lakes states,

01:43just north of Detroit, right through Chicagoland,

01:45as we mentioned, and also down toward Kansas City

01:48with significant snow,

01:49and this is going to cause widespread travel problems

01:52right in through this area here

01:53as we deal with that heavy snow

01:55that's going to come down at a rate

01:56of one to two inches per hour,

01:58and that's going to result in some big travel problems.

02:01That's right, so in addition to the snow threat,

02:03there is also going to be a severe weather threat

02:05associated with this storm system

02:07tomorrow afternoon to tomorrow evening across the southeast.

02:10That's correct.

02:11Look out across the southeastern part of the United States.

02:14Concern here about a few widely separated tornadoes,

02:17flash flooding, damaging thunderstorm winds,

02:20all part of the threat here tomorrow

02:23along the I-55 and also the I-20 corridor.

02:33All right, John, so in addition to this second storm system,

02:36we're also watching out for potentially

02:38heavy rainfall-producing third system across the West Coast.

02:41Here comes storm number three,

02:43and this one is going to have

02:44a significant atmospheric river.

02:46Look at where it's directed, right to Southern California.

02:49This is where we need the rain

02:50to help with the short-term drought conditions,

02:53but it can't come too fast, too furious.

02:55If that occurs, then we're going to be dealing with

02:57a significant concern about flash flooding,

03:00especially in areas where those devastating wildfires

03:04have occurred recently across the L.A. area,

03:06and we have burn scars from those wildfires.

03:10That's highly susceptible to mudslides, rock slides,

03:13and dangerous flooding down in areas

03:16associated with those burn scars,

03:18so that's gonna be a major concern.

03:20That could quickly escalate to a life-threatening

03:23flash flooding situation.

03:25All right, John, so let's go ahead and track this

03:26hour by hour here with our future track radar.

03:28So that Western storm system,

03:30it's gonna be bringing lots of impactful weather here

03:33as it heads into the Northeast

03:35over the next couple of days heading into the weekend.

03:37Another weekend storm, Damien, as you mentioned,

03:39that storm is gonna cross the country,

03:41bringing a wide variety of snow, ice,

03:43and severe thunderstorm impacts,

03:45and look at where it is by later Sunday afternoon

03:48up and across the portions of the Northeast.

03:50We'll be dealing with snow and ice inland.

03:53Initially, this will be a little bit of snow and ice

03:56along the I-95 corridor in the big cities,

03:59but then go over to rain,

04:00and a heavy rain at that in some locations.

04:03All right, so, John, what do people need to know about here

04:05as we head into the weekend with this February frenzy?

04:08Well, the main key is frequent disruptions

04:10to everyday life.

04:11There'll be school delays and cancellations

04:13in several areas, and all kinds of travel problems.

04:17Whenever you have delays and cancellations at big airports,

04:21that has the risk of spreading that out

04:23all across the country,

04:24even at areas that are not impacted by the storm.
