We're here with Paul Tyler today of John O'Groats.

He is the owner and operator.

It is a staple.

It is an iconic restaurant on Pico and Rancho Park

right by the park.

How long has John O'Groats been there?

We have been open on February 26th.

It'll be 43 years.

Yeah, very quickly.

That is amazing.

Okay, and you know, you have,

like everybody who's anybody

and everyone in between who goes there.

So sadly, I know you have a lot of clients,

customers who lost their homes

and you are no stranger to helping people in need,

especially when it comes to food.

We've known each other for what, like 15 years at least?

And you're always, always helping out people.

So tell me what you're doing

for the people affected, your customers.

Well, essentially everybody that has been coming

into John O'Groats over the last couple of weeks,

I will check in with them.

If I know them, if I don't know them

and ask, you know, how's everything?

And you know, you get some pretty candid answers

regarding their status with their homes.

In the first week, of course,

it was either they were evacuated,

they'd lost their home, they were housing somebody.

So in that moment, I would say, you know what?

We got this.

You know, you're here for comfort.

We'd like to buy you, you know, your lunch, your breakfast.

If we can provide a dinner for you,

you know, maybe a family style fried chicken,

something of that nature.

And, you know, so many people were just so overwhelmed

with what was going on in their lives

and were the offer of just the comfort.

You know, a lot of people were very emotional.

So in doing that, you know, just being able to provide

not just the food,

because really it's more than just the food.

It's about the feeling that people come in

when they come in the John O'Groats.

It feels like a second home to many people.

I would say that a large number of close friends

from Loyola High School,

both my classmates and or my son's classmates

are currently experiencing what it is to not have a house.

And today, for example, I had a very close friend.

We went to Loyola together.

We played football and he is completely without a house now.

He and his wife rented an apartment in Santa Monica,

but we spoke about how surreal it is

that all this is happening.

So we are concentrating on not just feeding them with food,

but also comforting them.

And that's really what we've been kind of focusing on.

It's always that way at John O'Groats.

So it does always feel,

you always make everyone feel at home

and your mom's there sometimes and your brother

and your family, you know, your wonderful kids.

It does feel like a home, whether it's a disaster or not.

Now you have taken it a step further

and you're providing for the firefighters.

Sure, well, essentially, again,

it's something that needs to be done.

These persons that are taking care of other people,

they're heroes in their own right.

And we've always felt that way.

We've always had that kind of relationship

with both our friends in the fire department

and police officers,

that the services that they offer

for our community are essential.

And we recognize what they do.

And so what people,

and I've got some very generous friends,

a shout out to my college fraternity brothers

and good friends who have donated a lot of money

to feed the first responders.

And so we've been doing that either

in the way of breakfast burritos, sandwiches, dinner,

supplementing if they come in to order food to go,

just buying their lunches outright.

You know, and something that's not just now,

because, you know, I would like to,

we provided, and actually, truth be told,

we've always provided a 50% discount

for all police officers and fire persons.

Well, I think it's not just nice, it's necessary.

Come on, a lot of people don't do it.

So people listening, if they want to help,

they can also do what your friend did

because you are a family owned business.

So, I mean, it's very generous that you do this,

If people, because there are a lot of people

What I like to see is people get involved

and it can be a $10 donation or a $1,000 donation.

It's just, I think, and it's something

that I've always told, well, and my children anyway,

it's like, don't stand on the sidelines.

Be a part of what's going on.

And so anybody can help.

It can be in the way of your time.

It can be in the way of your treasures,

And so I've had persons that they said,

well, we can't donate it,

but can we take it to the police officers

or the fire department?

Yeah, certainly.

So, you know, people will offer to drive the meals

if I can't get out of the office.

There is the fire department directly down the street

from us.

So that's kind of cool.

That's about 50 yards away.

And that's fire station 92.

There is a fire station that is located,

let me see, located over at Olympic near Federal.

And the other fire station that's close to us

is on Sunset and Beverly Glen.

And I believe that's fire station 71.

So all of them we've been able to get some stuff up to.

And the first day, that Wednesday,

I went over to the Westwood Rec Center

to take biscuits, coffee.

And again, it's not about the food.

It's really more about the comfort that people receive

from eating or drinking a cup of coffee.

Yeah, and well, to know that someone cared about them

and is thinking of them.

I think that's even more than the food.

but that you went to the trouble to make it,

to think of them, to deliver it and to show up

beyond just handing them a cup of coffee.
