Heavy rain pushes eastwards over southern areas of the UK this afternoon, with winds beginning to pick up across southern coasts. Brighter spells in Northern Ireland, while rain will also affect northern England and Scotland through this evening. Into tomorrow, Storm Eowyn will arrive in the early hours bringing dangerous conditions with very strong winds and heavy downpours. Red warnings for wind are in effect for Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England, and an amber wind warning is also in effect for Wales, England and Scotland. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 23/01/2025. 00:00Storm Eoghan will hit the UK tonight with damaging gusts of wind on Friday.

00:05Met Office red warnings are in place across Northern Ireland, Central and

00:09South Western Scotland. The storm system has been intensifying as we've been

00:14through Wednesday night and into Thursday. This massive cloud under there

00:18that's where the storm is picking up intensity and will continue to do so as

00:22it approaches the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom over the next 12

00:26hours or so. Full details on that in just a second. First of all we've got to

00:30get rid of today's weather because there's some lively downpours out there

00:33right now. Gusty winds too for West Wales and South Western England. Met Office

00:37yellow warning in place gusts of 50 or 60 miles an hour. They'll be easing in the

00:41south and west. The sky is actually bright in here this afternoon but

00:44staying pretty wet across much of Eastern England, Northern England and a

00:48good part of Scotland with a little bit of snow over the hills. Some brighter

00:52spells in Northern Ireland but also a few showers coming in here through the

00:55rest of the day. Temperature wise still cold under that zone of cloud and rain

00:59struggling temperatures 5-6 degrees but it is turning a little milder across the

01:03south 7-8-9 maybe double digits in the far southwest. And then all eyes down to

01:09the southwest as the cloud starts to move in from storm Eowyn. The rain

01:14getting into southern parts of the Republic of Ireland through this evening

01:17then spreading northwards. Some snow mixed in over the hills of Northern

01:21Ireland that shouldn't last too long but then the wet weather swings across most

01:24areas by the end of the night. Heavy pulses of rain pushed along by a strong

01:29and well very strong and gusty wind with some more snow over the hills of

01:34Northern England and into Scotland. Let's look at the winds in detail because yes

01:38it is going to turn wet. Yes there'll be some snow on the hills but the winds are

01:42likely to cause the biggest disruption, the most damage. There's the storm system

01:48itself just drifting up to the northwest of Northern Ireland. The strongest winds

01:53here on its southern flank. That's where the isobars are really squeezed together.

01:58If we rewind again and run through the night put the wind gusts on we can see

02:03just how strong, how damaging they are likely to be. Initially getting into

02:08southwestern parts of the Republic of Ireland around about midnight but then

02:12look at this zone of really strong winds that get into the west coast of Ireland

02:16and then across into Northern Ireland by Friday morning rush hour. So some of the

02:21strongest winds likely across Northern Ireland on Friday mornings rush hour but

02:25also look at this zone of very powerful winds across the Irish Sea into

02:29southwest Scotland and then as the storm itself, the middle, the centre of the low

02:33heading its way up across the Western Isles. These strong winds on its southern

02:36flank get into central and western parts of Scotland. That zone of damaging gusts

02:42of wind through the early part of the afternoon. The storm itself then heads up

02:47across the Northern Isles with strong winds still across northern Scotland

02:50even as we head into Saturday. It's going to be a very, very windy spell right

02:55across the UK but let's focus in on the warnings because of that storm system.

02:59Red warnings for Northern Ireland and central and western parts of Scotland.

03:05Gusts of wind in this zone widely 60-70 mph. Gusts of 80-90 mph

03:10expected. The possibility in exposed areas of gusts of 100 mph. Those

03:15kind of winds are damaging. They are going to cause structural issues, bring

03:19down power cables, branches, cause widespread travel disruption as well.

03:24There are amber warnings flanking that red warning over northern England, North

03:28Wales and northern Scotland. Broad yellow warnings covering the whole of the UK.

03:33That's for the winds but there's also a warning for snow across Scotland, mostly

03:39over the hills but could cause some disruption some of the higher routes and

03:42of course with the winds that means blizzards and a rain warning with today's

03:46rain followed by further heavy rain could cause some flooding issues over

03:49parts of Wales and southwest England. A lot of warnings in place. Check out the

04:03coming in. Again lots and lots of information available on our website and

04:07please do keep up to date with the forecast. Here's how the day looks

04:12weather-wise. A very wet start. There's the snow over northern Scotland. Further

04:16spell of strong winds burrowing there across northern Ireland then into

04:21western Scotland. So it's really through the morning into the early afternoon

04:24that those damaging gusts are likely in this but a very gusty day everywhere.

04:28Notice actually much of England and Wales fine and bright sunny spells for a good

04:32chunk of the day once the initial rain has passed through but it stays very wet

04:37across the far northwest and those strong winds will continue in northern

04:41Scotland well into Friday night and the warnings continue into Saturday morning

04:46too. Temperature wise well double digits across the south haven't seen that for a

04:49while but obviously won't feel all that mild with the with the wind and that

04:53initial burst of rain and still pretty cold across northern Scotland hence why

04:57we're continuing to see some snow over the hills which will continue through

05:01Friday evening as well. So Friday evening's rush hour still pretty grim

05:06across northern areas and the warning in force for those winds elsewhere it

05:11tends a little drier but and then another finger of rain coming into the

05:14southwest. What happens after storm Aon? Well it will be clearing away as we head

05:19into the weekend drifting up to the north but they'll still be quite a few

05:23showers around into western areas on Saturday. Generally though a bit of a lull

05:28before this next area of low pressure comes in weather fronts bringing more

05:31rain falling onto the rain that we're going to see over the next 48 hours that

05:36could cause some issues so we need to keep our eyes on that for the winds also

05:41picking up not the same kind of level with this area of low pressure but still

05:46the potential for further disruption during the second half of the weekend

05:49from this area of low pressure. As always here at the Met Office we will be
