I'm here at South Perth Foreshore where it is still hot as parts of WA are entering the
00:08
third day of a severe to extreme heatwave.
00:11
Now in Perth, temperatures are expected to be a little cooler than previous days.
00:17
It's heading into a top of 37 degrees, however those temperatures are expected to rise again
00:23
tomorrow closer to that 40 degree mark.
00:27
That's ahead of the weekend where temperatures are expected to dip down to the low to 30s,
00:32
high 20s, but as we know it is those overnight minimum temperatures which bring little relief
00:41
and right now Perth is halfway through a stretch of four nights above 25 degrees.
00:48
And just on those minimums, towns in the southwest broke record overnight temperatures.
00:54
Bunbury topped 27.3 degrees, beating its previous record from February last year.
01:02
Busselton also topped its hottest night, 26.7 degrees, smashing its previous record of 25.9
01:11
degrees back in January 2013.
01:15
Other record temperatures were broken across the state on the first day of the heatwave
01:21
which is expected to last most of the week.
01:24
On Monday, towns of Bridgetown, Collie and Busselton recorded their hottest day in January.
01:31
Geraldton reached 49.3, equaling its hottest day ever on record.
01:38
Towns forecast for the hottest temperatures today across the state include Southern Cross
01:44
in the central Wheatbelt area reaching a top of 45.
01:48
Linster in the Goldfields is also expected to reach a maximum of 45 degrees today and
01:54
stay there until Saturday apart from Friday where it's expected to have a little bit of
02:00
an increase with a 46 degree day.
02:03
There was some good news overnight as Western Power reported crews working through the night
02:09
to restore a vast majority of electricity to customers who lost power.
02:15
More than 12,000 customers were left without electricity after the network experienced
02:22
record-breaking demand.
02:24
Western Power also said it would be reviewing and cancelling some planned outages across
02:30
the state as Western Australians continue to swelter through this heat.
02:36
Perth is expected to have some cooler weather on Sunday, a little sooner than those inland
02:42
regions which won't experience a drop in temperatures until Monday early next week.
02:49
The Department of Health is also reminding people to stay hydrated and indoors if possible
02:56
and to check up on friends and loved ones who might be feeling this heat a little longer
03:02
as we are about halfway.
