Queensland’s heatwave expected to intensify with a top of 37C in Brisbane

Much of Queensland sweltered through another scorching day, with the mercury reaching the mid-40s in Western parts of the state. But the weather bureau says a reprieve is on its way.

00:10The energy grid was getting a workout as Queenslanders looked for any way to beat the heat.

00:24Overcast but it's still bloody hot as.

00:26In Townsville, some took to the ice.

00:29It's school holidays and it's so hot so we just thought we'd come and cool off.

00:33Returning holiday makers forced to adjust.

00:37We had minus 2 to minus 4 in Japan and here I think we've got 38 to 40 degrees.

00:42Straight off with the jumpers and back to t-shirts and shorts.

00:49We are constantly busy but in summertime you will get a lot more.

00:54Out west, even the emus sought shade as the mercury topped out at 44 in Longreach.

01:00Good time to just head to the pub and have a quiet one and settle down for the rest of the day.

01:07Well, I'm not. It's just going to be hot but it's alright.

01:11Energy transmission operator Powerlink says the grid is coping just fine

01:16but they'll continue to monitor the situation as Queenslanders head home for the day

01:20and switch on the air conditioning.

01:22The good news is a cool change is on the way.

01:25We'll see a southeasterly change push through southeastern Queensland

01:29later tonight and into early Saturday.

01:32That'll cool temperatures down by about 5 to 7 degrees.

01:35A welcome reprieve just in time for the long weekend.
