Hello, there. Welcome to your latest Met Office forecast. It has been a disruptive 24 hours
00:06
or so for some parts of the U.K. Low pressures moved in from the Atlantic, bumping into cold
00:11
air giving heavy snow across central northern parts of the U.K. in particular. That low
00:16
pressure moves away at the beginning of next week. Cold northerly air remains in force
00:20
and then further weather systems try to move in across southern areas, something to keep
00:24
an eye on for later on in the week. Looking at the picture through yesterday evening
00:30
overnight and into this morning, we can see the rain and snow quite widely across the
00:36
U.K. Some of this falling as freezing rain and sleet as well and then through the course
00:41
of last night and this morning pushed its way northwards as well. Disruption. We've
00:45
seen 20 centimetres of snow in places. This will continue to build through the day. Heavy
00:50
rain then across the south as milder air moved in here. So, looking at the picture
00:55
for the rest of Sunday, we can see the band of rain, sleet and snow stretching across
01:02
northern England into Wales. Heavy rain across Wales could lead to some localised flooding
01:06
here. Snow continues particularly over the high ground of northern England into southern
01:10
Scotland. Another 10 to 20 centimetres possible in places through the day today. An amber
01:15
warning remaining in force. To the north of this, something a little drier for parts of
01:19
northern Ireland, though fairly cloudy. And some brighter spells for Scotland, but wintry
01:23
showers moving in to the highlands and islands here. Mild across much of central southern
01:28
parts of England. The risk of some heavy rain across Wales into south-west England and temperatures
01:33
here 13, 14, perhaps even 15 Celsius. A large contrast to central northern parts of England
01:40
into northern Ireland and Scotland. Temperatures barely above freezing here. Turning quite
01:45
windy as well across southern counties through the day. Gales perhaps around some coastal
01:51
stretches. Heavy bursts of rain across England and Wales through the evening time. Meteorologist
01:55
warnings for rain here. So, we could be seeing some localised flooding issues. Further snow
01:59
across the higher ground of the Pennines, in particular into the Borders region of Scotland.
02:05
Could be some tricky travelling conditions first thing on Monday morning, particularly
02:09
towards the Edinburgh area. Further wintry showers across northern Ireland and Scotland
02:14
as well. Temperatures falling below freezing here. Maybe not quite as cold as last night.
02:19
We saw minus 11 Celsius in the Glens of Scotland, but still falling below freezing here and
02:24
some icy stretches forming. Generally, towns and cities holding up and colder air pushing
02:28
into southern counties again. Temperatures a little lower, but generally staying above
02:33
freezing. Heavy rain through Monday morning continues to push south-eastwards across southern
02:39
and eastern England, but cold air filtering its way southwards. So, further wintry showers
02:43
For many parts of the UK, a bit more confined to higher ground, but perhaps some lower levels
02:48
too, particularly across northern England into Scotland. Abiding northerly wind developing
02:53
pretty strong down some eastern coasts as well, just making it feel fairly cold. Some
02:58
icy stretches continuing through the day and temperatures not reaching much above freezing
03:03
across the northern half of the UK. In the south, highs around 7 to 9 Celsius, so lower
03:09
compared to Sunday, just feeling colder as that mild air moves out of the way. Into the
03:14
evening time, further showers down the east coast and blustery winds here. Elsewhere,
03:18
generally a mixture of clear spells and showers. Icy stretches developing as temperatures fall
03:24
below freezing once more. So, another cold night to take us into Tuesday morning and
03:29
the week ahead is looking cold. Cold, frosty nights, icy stretches continuing. The risk
03:35
of snow showers, particularly across the north and the west, and then perhaps something a
03:38
bit more persistent across southern counties midweek. So, there's a lot going on with the
03:42
weather through the rest of today as well as the week ahead. So, it is worth staying
03:47
up to date with all the Met Office warnings on our website and our social media channels.
03:52
See you again soon.
