00:00Hello there and welcome to your evening weather update from the Met Office. It's

00:05the 31st of December. Into the new year the air turns a lot colder. Before that

00:10though it's lively outside with the risk of heavy rain, strong winds and rain and

00:16snow across the north of Scotland. The air is turning colder from the north,

00:19windy wherever you are and the risk of snow across Shetland as well as Orkney.

00:24That rain turning to snow across northern parts of Scotland. Further south

00:28gusty winds across many parts and a rain warning then kicks in across

00:32northern England as well as Wales. Some high rainfall totals as this weather

00:36front stalls before sinking southwards into New Year's Day and the winds will

00:40be strong associated with it. Hence the reason why there's a wind warning across

00:44central and southern parts of England and Wales. More details of our weather

00:52live and what the risks are associated with different types of weather and then

00:56the air turns a lot colder from the north with a snow and ice warning for

00:59northern Scotland. Now we are heading out this evening, stepping outside, just take

01:04a look at this detail here. The rain will continue across much of Wales, the

01:09Midlands extending up towards Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire as well, even

01:14Northumberland seeing a little bit. Now for Cumbria the rain will wax and wane

01:17as well as for Lancashire. You'll see some strong winds associated with this

01:22weather front. So this wet weather continues across these parts through

01:26this evening. It may just nudge up to southern parts of Northern Ireland as we

01:30head through the evening but notice towards the north a strong wind here

01:34driving that rain and eventually that cold air will sink southwards so the

01:39rain will turn to snow with some snow showers arriving across Shetland as well.

01:43Now through the evening this rain continues across northern England

01:47perhaps bumping northwards for a time and extending across the Midlands.

01:51Southern parts of Wales seeing the rain wax and wane but you could see some

01:55drier weather as we head through to midnight and certainly drier conditions

01:59with a strong wind across central and southern parts of England and Wales

02:02towards East Anglia. So as we head through to the first part of 2025 you

02:08can see where this rain is, you can see where the strong winds are, the rain

02:11turning to snow across the far north of Scotland, a real biting wind extending

02:15down towards Northern Ireland as well. Now through into New Year's Day this

02:21band of rain will have some heavy pulses associated with it and it will turn

02:26quite squally through the early hours of the 1st of January as gradually it moves

02:31southwards. Elsewhere this band of rain here with some snow associated with it

02:35will gradually sink down towards Aberdeenshire as well as Kengorn,

02:39Northwest Highlands seeing perhaps even some blizzards associated with those

02:43strong winds. Here are your temperatures then still mild in the south much colder

02:48in the north and here are your warning zones as we enter the 1st of January. So

02:53a rain warning across northern parts of Wales down towards southern parts of

02:57Wales and northern parts of England. Yes that rain will be quite heavy so a wet

03:01and windy start to the day here but notice there's some clearance coming in

03:05from the north. So you'll see some drier skies perhaps one or two showers but

03:09certainly some clearer weather for places such as the far north of England

03:12the far south of Scotland through the first part of New Year's Day. Showers

03:16file in across Northern Ireland, Western Scotland as well as that rain becomes

03:20even heavier as we head through into the middle part of New Year's Day. Some

03:24squally winds associated with it as well so the winds will be the main feature of

03:28the weather across central and southern parts of England and Wales through the

03:31first part of the day and then the wind kicks in from the north bringing with it

03:36some snow showers mostly across coastal districts but penetrating inland as well

03:40as this band of rain with a little bit snow particularly over the higher ground

03:44moves down towards northern England through the latter part of the day. We

03:47hang on to the rain across central southern parts of England and Wales and

03:50also those squally winds. Now the warning for snow and ice across the far north as

03:57temperatures tumble so that will continue into the 2nd of January the air

04:02does turn that cold and in fact you'll notice the difference wherever you are

04:05through the latter part of the day. Temperatures really taking a tumble

04:08towards more southern areas. That rain eventually clears through the 1st of

04:12January which is good news and you'll see some clearer skies. Notice this

04:16frost extending southwards into the early hours of Thursday morning so a

04:21fairly widespread frost. The risk of ice where you've seen those snow showers and

04:25those snow showers continue through the day on Thursday. So mostly along the

04:30coastline but they will move inland particularly across the Cairngorms and

04:34some wintry showers moving down towards Northern Ireland. A few clipping the far

04:38west of Wales and also the east coast seeing some showers with that driving

04:43wind. It's a cold day with a wind chill where you are exposed to that wind. Inland

04:48you'll see some sunshine and after a frosty start on Friday yes some

04:53sunshine coming through and just a few wintry showers. Wherever you are take
