Kevin, exiting the All-Sydney Cup on penalties against Nap Hill, first say a few contentious
00:08
decisions from the referee today, to put it diplomatically.
00:11
Disgraceful, terrible, not up to the level, spent nearly all the game in the middle of
00:16
the pitch, there's been an elbow, a clear elbow that everybody in the ground has seen,
00:21
everybody in the ground has seen and he's 70 yards away from it, then he's given a goal
00:26
kick for something there's no players anywhere near it, it's technically probably a handball
00:29
that's gone off a player, it's gone out for a corner, he's given a goal kick, it's terrible,
00:34
he is not up to the level, I don't call out officials at any given point, what he's done
00:40
today won the safety of people as well, there's been four head injuries, he's not even called
00:46
the physio, honestly, we've played really well today, we've played really really well
00:52
and do you know what, it's our own fault we haven't won the game, we should have finished
00:55
our chances, but I tell you what, if they're coming here and we get punished for when we
00:59
do something wrong, that needs to be looked at, because that is rubbish.
01:03
Yeah and you can't let, I mean the head injuries especially, it was numerous times that people
01:07
were going down and yeah.
01:09
Look we've missed big chances in the first half and we can't keep coming in and going
01:13
look we've been the better side and we should be scoring goals and we should be, but it's
01:17
difficult to keep players at a level where they show respect when there's a bloke in
01:23
the middle, he's just not, he's nowhere near the level, he's not up with play, the linesmen,
01:28
the official, the other official is commenting about it, it's a worry and I'm going to say
01:32
something, do something about it, people are in danger, that's no good, if that happens
01:38
anywhere else, not on a football pitch, police are looking at that.
01:43
And obviously you can't, it goes without saying, you can't legislate for that at all can you?
01:46
And does that change the game, no, but the decision to not give the corner does and there's
01:51
not a player within five yards, so it's clearly come off of them, I don't know how he's got
01:56
it wrong, I'll tell you how he's got it wrong, because he's nowhere near it again, it's poor.
02:00
I've got to look at the things we've done though, we've played really well, we've dominated
02:04
the game for periods of time, we've probably created 10, 12 chances, we've limited them
02:08
to two, we've got caught really, the goal's poor from us in terms of alright, it shouldn't
02:13
have been a goal kick, but then we've got to deal with it, we've got the whole pitch
02:15
to deal with it, we need to be better there, but we've asked for attitude and desire from
02:21
our group, we're getting that, but now we just need clinical, you know, goals win games
02:26
and we don't score enough of them, you know, we can defend really well for long periods
02:30
of time and at the end of the day, we're going away and we've got another game on Tuesday
02:35
when they dust themselves down and get on with it, it's another tough one, but look
02:38
at the teams we're playing at the minute, first in the league, second in the league,
02:42
third in the league, I think fourth in the league next week, competing, but the big moments
02:47
don't go our way and it's partly down to us, but you know, there's been four, if not
02:53
five big decisions in the last three games that have gone against us, are they ending
02:59
up getting the result for the other team? I don't know, but listen, it's getting to
03:03
the point now where somebody needs to look at it, they get assessed and sent to them,
03:07
how are these people still reffing when they're clearly not able to keep up with the game?
03:15
Yeah, keeping up is obviously basic really, isn't it?
03:18
You can't be 70 yards away from the ball, you can't be, you're either not fit enough
03:24
or you don't know how to ref, so when an incident like that happens, and if there's 200 people
03:30
in there, 150 of them are looking at that going, how's that not been given? And that's
03:35
people up the other end of the pitch, so they're seeing it from the other end of the pitch,
03:38
so it doesn't even excuse how far away it was, because everyone still saw it. Their
03:41
management team came over and said, we can see why you're so frustrated, they knew exactly
03:45
what had happened, and the only bloke on the pitch that matters didn't give it.
03:50
Obviously it's really frustrating and deflating right now, but you do have to take the positives
03:54
of the performance and how well you did play.
03:57
Players have done what they were asked to do, they've carried it out the way they needed
04:02
to, but we're in the same position we were in last game, the game before that, we're
04:07
not taking chances, we're creating chances, we look together as a unit, we look like we
04:13
care, which is something I didn't think we had 6-7 weeks ago. All that's changed, but
04:18
you can't get by on just being the better team and people patting you on the back and
04:25
saying it's disappointing that the best team doesn't always win. No it doesn't. At the
04:30
end of the day, you don't want to go away at the end of the season and go, you were
04:32
the best team in 20 out of the 40 games, but we lost them that day. What does that matter?
04:37
But we've got Tuesday now, so we need to focus on that and how we go about it, then I think
04:46
we've got a bit of a break.
04:48
Obviously putting the ball in the goal is cliche, it's the hardest thing, but that's
04:54
just the bit that's got to find really, that clinical edge I guess.
05:00
If a goal scorer, they're invaluable, teams with money will have them, of course they
05:06
will. It's not for want of trying, but you need someone that has that knack of popping
05:13
up in areas. Sometimes they're probably the laziest player on your team, but the way we
05:18
settle and the way we play, we play with like a 4-9 at the minute and it suits us, but at
05:23
the end of the day, we look fluid, we look good in the final third, we just don't look
05:28
like we're going to finish.
05:29
At half-time, presumably it was a good performance, but we need to get goals. Obviously they did
05:35
get the goal in the second half with their own goal from the corner.
05:38
You could say we scored a goal, actually more than us, pretty much some sort of way. We've
05:47
got to look at it in a way that, have we done what we should be doing? Yes. Are we working
05:52
hard enough? Yes. Where's the problems lie? The problems lie with goals conceded.
05:58
I'm going to say there's a big contribution from the officials, which I won't normally
06:02
say because I'll go away disappointed. I've been in a lot of trouble with officials over
06:06
the years, but when that happens, people wonder why you're getting in trouble.
06:12
Can you raise that with relevant people at all or is it not?
06:15
If I lose them that, they support their own. I've been in a position where I've been tried
06:20
and done for something that wasn't even me and it doesn't matter what. They sent in evidence
06:25
to the FA and they turned it away. They gave me a hearing date and apparently I didn't
06:30
attend it, but they didn't even send me an email. How can you argue that? You're sat
06:35
in front of a computer because you've been told it's at six o'clock at night. They don't
06:37
send you a link. So they run the case without you, but you've sent clear evidence that it
06:42
doesn't happen. So you've made that up for yourself.
06:48
Fleet now, quick turnaround, but take the positives on the performance today.
06:52
Yeah, it's been a tough game. They're up there and they want to get promoted for sure.
06:58
I think they played in the VARs today, so they would have had a tough game. We've had
07:01
a tough game. Let's quickly get people refreshed and see how well we can get ourselves up for
07:07
Tuesday. That's our job as a coach, a manager's job. Try and take away from the disappointment
07:13
that we've probably experienced at the end of the day and try and say, look, just keep
07:18
looking at the positives, keep working out how we can get better and how we can maintain
07:23
the level that we have started reaching in the last few weeks. And then something's going
07:27
to give. Something's got to break for us, but you've got to make your own luck as well
07:32
at the same time. So we'll just keep poking around and we'll see.
07:36
Yeah, so you've got to make your own luck, but eventually you keep doing the right things.
07:39
The footballing gods will sort of turn generally, usually.
07:43
You'd think so. We won't get many. And again, does it come down to relationships that I've
07:50
built with officials over the years? Probably not. I may not have helped it, but at the
07:54
end of the day, you've still got to do your job properly. If you're at work and you don't
07:59
do your job properly, you lose your job. If I keep not getting results, I stand to lose
08:05
my job. But if we're going away and going, well, the last three games you've lost have
08:08
come because these decisions went against you. Yeah, but it's what it is.
