Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the weekend. A weekend in
00:04
transition in many respects. For some of course it's the last weekend of the
00:09
summer holidays and we do go from August to September that means the start of the
00:13
meteorological autumn. It's almost as if the weather knows because it will be a
00:17
weekend in which the weather changes from a very wet start in the northwest
00:21
to that rain clearing its way eastwards and introducing showery weather and
00:27
and cooler air across all parts by Sunday. In other words it's going to feel more
00:32
like autumn on the first day of the meteorological autumn. But it's summer
00:36
still for Friday afternoon across southern parts of the country. Warm
00:40
sunshine to end the day. Meanwhile very wet weather for western Scotland and
00:44
Northern Ireland in particular. That rainfall intensifying through Friday
00:48
night. Some horrendous conditions if you're traveling through Friday evening
00:52
and also that rainfall tending to build up through the next few days over the
00:56
higher ground of western Scotland and Northern Ireland in particular. Could be
01:00
some localized flooding. Yellow warning in force. The bright colors there
01:04
indicating that rainfall increasing further through the night time and into
01:08
the start of Saturday. Now let's take a look at what's causing that rainfall.
01:13
It's a weather front but it's a weather front that is very slow moving and it's
01:16
where these weather fronts combine called a triple point where the rainfall
01:20
will be at its most intense as we start the weekend. So it's in this area at
01:24
western Scotland. Northern Ireland particularly soggy to start off Saturday
01:27
morning. But by this stage it starts to be pushed along by the winds and that
01:32
means that it will bring the wet weather to western parts of England as well as
01:36
Wales for Saturday morning. Wet and windy as we begin the weekend in western and
01:42
northern parts of Britain. Winds touching gale force around exposed western coasts.
01:47
Complete different story ahead of the front though because for East Anglia and
01:50
the southeast a sunny start to the weekend only gradually clouding over and
01:55
the rainfall tending to peter out as it approaches this part of the country.
01:59
Rainfall continuing to be steady and heavy for northeast Scotland through
02:02
much of the day. But elsewhere for western Scotland, Northern Ireland,
02:06
western parts of England as well as Wales we replace the morning rain with
02:10
brighter skies but also frequent lively showers brought in by a blustery breeze.
02:16
Behind the weather front as the rain clears away we introduce cooler air so
02:20
temperatures in the high teens generally. But ahead of the front it is at least
02:25
warm for one more day and in one or two spots the sunnier parts of East Anglia
02:30
25 Celsius is possible. Now we clear that weather front completely by
02:35
Sunday morning and that means actually it's going to be a fresh start on Sunday
02:39
and some shelter spots will be down to the low single figures. But plenty of
02:42
sunshine for southern Britain. Meanwhile we're going to see even more showers
02:46
piling into essentially the northern two-thirds of the UK. North Wales,
02:50
northwards it's a very lively day with frequent heavy downpours, thunder and
02:55
hail in some of the livelier showers and there'll be a fair few showers pushing
02:59
into western parts of Wales and the southwest as well. In between the showers
03:04
some drier interludes not that many though for the north. Meanwhile it's
03:08
across central and southern Britain where we see the driest weather and say
03:12
into parts of the Midlands, central southern England and the far southeast
03:15
some places will largely avoid showers and stay dry through Sunday. It will be a
03:20
brisk breeze and it will feel a lot cooler I think in the southeast
03:24
temperatures only just making it up to 20 Celsius. So a cooler feel for Sunday,
03:29
frequent showers for many areas but of course always the opportunity to enjoy
03:34
some dry and brighter weather in between the showers. You can keep up to
03:38
date with all the latest through the weekend by following us on social media.
03:42
Bye bye.
