£70m Littlewoods redevelopment project approved

New start for the Littlewoods building as a £70m redevelopment project approved.

00:00On Edge Lane stands one of the region's most significant sites that, for the past three

00:05decades, has been left to rock and ruin. However, after being torched and left to decay, a new

00:10chapter has started for the Littlewoods building as a £70 million redevelopment project has been

00:14approved by Liverpool City Council. Built in 1938, the Art Deco building was first developed

00:19by John Moores as the headquarters for the Littlewoods Football Pools, a business which

00:23at its peak had 16 million weekly players. The site formed a key role during World War II,

00:28housing the Postal Censorship Department and for the manufacture of both parachutes and components

00:34of Halifax bombers. The Littlewoods Pools Company continued to operate in the building until its

00:38closure in 1994. The building is divided into three sections, including the east and west wings,

00:44separated by a 1960s edition The Hangar. Currently, the west wing includes five levels within the

00:49north and south bookends, as well as six further within the central clock tower. It's hoped the

00:54clock will be restored to its former glory alongside the iconic Littlewood signage.
