It is a Patriots Friday here on Jones and Keefe, and we're joined as we are each and every week by a member of the Patriots.
00:06
This week it is Dietrich Wise, Patriots defensive lineman. He's brought to you by Shaw's in Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh.
00:12
Dietrich, interesting timing here. How you doing this week?
00:16
Doing wonderful. How you doing today?
00:17
We're doing great. As always, we've been reacting to a story yesterday from the Patriots website, of all places,
00:24
that the locker room is teetering on a mutiny. Do you have any thoughts on that story, or do you find it amusing in any way?
00:32
What's your reaction to that?
00:35
I don't think that's true at all. I think that's very false. I don't know where those words or thoughts or opinions could have come from.
00:44
We have a lot of guys in here who bust a bus every day to get better.
00:49
Come here first thing in the morning, 5, 5.30, 6, work out, feel and watch, get their bodies ready to play.
00:56
They've been doing this for a long time.
01:00
If anything, if any anger is in the building, it's because they just want to win.
01:04
And we all have the culture and the mindset of the culture that's been built here, and that culture is winning.
01:11
So, if anything, we just want to win and get better.
01:17
But there is no turmoil, there is no animosity, there is no whatever word he used in the locker room.
01:23
I think where it comes from, based on Evan Lazar's reporting, is frustration with the offense.
01:30
The offense right now is 32nd out of 32, passing yards per game 31st out of 32 in scoring.
01:37
Obviously, Drake May is waiting in the wings, so I think we see some frustration on the field.
01:41
I know your teammate Demario Douglas apologized for the way he was carrying himself last week.
01:45
I think that's at least where the reporting came from.
01:48
So, it does seem like there is some level of frustration.
01:51
Maybe it's not a mutiny or teetering on a mutiny, but it does seem like there's some outward frustration on the team.
01:57
I wouldn't say that we're cheating or anything, but success.
02:01
We're really in the balance line.
02:06
And once we continue to fix the small details that we've been messing up on in these last four games,
02:12
once we fix those small details and execute them at a high level, then we're going to be cheering on success.
02:20
And that's what I'm saying today.
02:22
Your teammate Devon Gottschall was on with us on Monday and he told us that some of the players on defense
02:28
were being a little bit selfish and not just doing what was called.
02:33
Do you agree with him on that?
02:35
And if so, is that something you feel like will get cleaned up?
02:39
I think there have been some uncharacteristic plays by us.
02:45
I'm not going to put a title on it. I don't really know what it was.
02:48
But I would say that we have cleaned up a lot of things that we have been doing over the last couple games.
02:54
And like I said before to the media, it's only October.
02:58
So all the things that people are talking about, we have a whole lot of ball left.
03:03
And there's no indication of our future.
03:07
So what I like to say is we cleaned up everything and we're moving in the right direction from this day forward.
03:13
Do you like the fact that he brought that out publicly or would you have preferred that to stay in-house?
03:21
You said he, so who are you talking about?
03:23
Oh, Devon Gottschall. Sorry.
03:25
I don't know. I don't know how he said it, what he said.
03:32
First, I'm hearing this with you.
03:34
So I don't really know how it was asked, how it was questioned.
03:37
But long story short, we're focusing on winning here.
03:41
Focusing on getting better and focusing on getting our small things fixed.
03:46
You're not listening to, you didn't hear the interview here on Jones and Keefe.
03:48
You're not listening to Jones and Keefe.
03:49
Okay, that's okay, Dietrich. We understand.
03:52
That's okay.
03:54
Yeah, you're a busy guy. We get it.
03:56
You got stuff going on. We get it.
03:58
I haven't really heard much outside of this.
04:01
Well, he shared it right here on this very program, your pal there, Devon Gottschall.
04:05
So you talked about it's only October and you have a high degree of faith in turning things around.
04:11
Can I just ask why you have that high degree of faith?
04:13
Two years ago, you were an eight-win team.
04:15
Last year, you were a four-win team.
04:17
This year, a lot of prognosticators didn't feel great about the situation going into the year.
04:21
You're now one in three, three straight losses.
04:23
Why do you have that level of faith in the team based on how you played recently?
04:28
I see what these guys go through every day to get on the field.
04:32
I've been with this group of guys since April.
04:35
What they've gone through just to get in the building, their backstories, why they play.
04:41
I've seen them overcome injuries, fight through injuries, play through a lot of things that most,
04:47
not to be funny, but most people who watched the game wanted to get out of bed for.
04:52
So these guys are busting their butts, sacrificing every day to come here
04:58
and put everything on the line to get a win and have success for the team, their family, and past nation.
05:06
So that's why I believe that we will be moving up in the upward direction from this day forward.
05:13
When you guys lose two team captains for the season in Andrews and in Bentley,
05:18
you are also one of the remaining captains.
05:21
Do you feel as though you have to be more of a leader?
05:24
Do you have to make up for the voices that have been lost in that locker room?
05:28
Do you feel any more, I don't know if pressure is the right word, but responsibility maybe?
05:34
Well, first of all, my father always said, to much is good, much is required.
05:39
So me being a captain, me being eight years, that's already required of me to be a leader,
05:44
to be a captain, to be vocal.
05:46
I'm not going to do anything that's outside of myself.
05:49
So I'm just going to have a person, a leader, person, leader and captain
05:52
who always leads with actions, empathy, and words.
05:59
So I'm just aimed every day to be the highest version of who I am, not anybody else,
06:06
not pick up any slack because when Bentley went down, that hurt the team
06:11
and I knew, okay, next in line to be the voice is me just because he always talks.
06:17
When D.A. went down, that definitely hurts as well.
06:20
A lot of guys are still rooting for him to his recovery.
06:24
Both of them are still around, giving their love, their words of encouragement,
06:28
their education, their knowledge to the game.
06:31
And there's guys from offense who are stepping up as well.
06:34
They're just speaking for myself.
06:36
I talk to the team along with other guys who are leaders as well.
06:41
We're talking to Dietrich Wise, Patriots captain, joining us here on Jones and Keefe.
06:45
You have your block party, your fifth annual block party coming up in Mattapam.
06:50
What can you tell us about that event, Dietrich?
06:54
This is going to be a wonderful event.
06:56
This event will be this Saturday, October 5th, starting at 2 o'clock.
07:02
This is a great event that I put together with my team to shine a bright light on Mattapam
07:10
and the Boys and Girls Club Center there and everything that they do,
07:14
and then also at the same time to create a community of unity, inspiration, and education.
07:21
And doing that event, we just give out free food.
07:25
We have free produce for the families and kids who come out, haircuts and abradors for the kids.
07:34
And also there will be a lot of performance from the kids who are at the Boys and Girls Club.
07:39
They'll be out there performing for their friends, their family, and their community.
07:43
So come on out if you're hearing this to Mattapam, October 5th, this Saturday, at 2 o'clock.
07:50
Okay. It's a great event. It's a great cause.
07:52
Again, Saturday, October 5th, it's going to be at the Josh Craft Mattapam Teen Center,
07:56
Boys and Girls Club in Mattapam, the 5th annual Dietrich Wise Block Party.
08:00
Dietrich, we appreciate the time. Best of luck at the event on Saturday.
08:03
Best of luck against the Dolphins on Sunday, and we'll talk to you soon.
08:06
Thank you very much.
08:08
All right, Dietrich Wise joining us here on a Patriots Friday, brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market,
08:13
perfecting the art of fresh.
08:15
I mean, what's he going to tell us? There's a mutiny going on in there?
08:18
No, but he shot that down. I mean, as clear as you can.
08:21
He's shutting it down. He's, you know, similar to Devon Gottschall on Monday.
08:26
They still have confidence in themselves. They think they're better than what they're showing.
08:30
And so, like, this is Sunday is such a great opportunity for that because you can start to buy in a little bit.
08:36
Be like, all right, if you could beat Miami, another team that's kind of in the basement with you guys right now,
08:40
if you beat them, it's like, okay, all right, that's a step in the right direction.
08:43
But if you don't, it kind of swings it pretty dramatically the other way.
08:46
No, it's true. And look, I think the defense, you've made this point a bunch.
08:51
The defense might be a little insulated from the frustration because they've been poor on their side of the ball.
08:57
So what are they going to do? They're going to rant and rave about it?
08:59
Some of the guys on offense are probably more outraged than the guys on defense.
09:03
So we can ask Alex Van Pelt about that when he joins us at 1230 here on a Patriots Friday.
09:08
I do like this Roba in the Twitch chat, twitch.tv slash Boston WEEI.
09:12
What's that I hear in the background? Is that a mutiny?
09:16
It was a little noisy in the background there with you guys.
09:18
Maybe that was a pitchforks, maybe torches, things like that going to his office.
09:23
We go into the ordering brunch. Well, maybe they walk into his office.
09:28
He's like, don't come in here. I let's let's go with you guys.
09:30
I'm one of the players. Go find the Wolfpack. I'm one of you.
