00:00Cubs baseball president Jed Hoyer and the team agree on a multi-year extension.
00:05Wow, that's very interesting timing.
00:08Very interesting timing. Good for Jed.
00:11Why do you say it's interesting timing?
00:12Because the deadline is forcing all sorts of activity and all sorts of decisions.
00:21You see Seth Lugo got an extension by the Royals who decided to not part with him
00:27because conversations take place because they have to at this point.
00:32If Jed Hoyer is making decisions that could destroy the farm system in a go-for-it year
00:40that is his final year, maybe you want him to think more holistically.
00:45Right. Think about the fact that you're going to be the steward of this thing for a while
00:49and not just we're throwing a raging kegger to finish your tenure as Cubs president of baseball operations.
00:56His mentor Theo Epstein left before he had to facilitate the trades that he knew were going to have to be made.
01:03He sure did.
01:04So he left and then Jed made the decisions that affected his tenure.
01:10So Jed now this week is going to make decisions that affect his own tenure.
01:17That's significant to me. That's why the timing jumps out to me.
01:20There's a part of me that wonders though, if you're a Cub fan,
01:23do you kind of want lame duck Jed to go out there and be like,
01:27I don't care. It's not my problem.
01:30We're going to spend.
01:32It's a good question because I think the decisions that are being made this week
01:37for a lot of franchises are based on,
01:39do you want to go for it and win the World Series right now or not?
01:43You know, do you want to extend your time horizon when you're on your deathbed?
01:48Are you going to say, boy,
01:50I gave our organization a chance to win for a period of seven to nine years.
01:55Ha ha ha!
