The UK's top business leaders under the age of 42, an LGBTQ plus housing project in Manchester,
00:06
and big plans for a skincare and beauty business based in South Wales,
00:09
all feature in today's business briefing.
00:17
I'll kick things off, Remy, and I don't mean that as a pun, but I can reveal that a professional
00:21
footballer features in Insider's latest Northwest 42 under 42 list. So would you like to tell us
00:26
a bit about that list to us, of course? So 42 under 42s has gone back for over 30 years,
00:32
really, and it's one of Insider's original flagship features. In it, we really sort of
00:38
profile the up-and-coming names in the world of business. We could be managing directors
00:42
or founders, a lot of them as well, and I believe the one you're alluding to is Tom Davies.
00:48
Yeah, of course, the professional footballer now playing for Sheffield United, but former
00:52
Everton, and I always remember with Tom Davies that incredible goal he scored against Man City,
00:57
you know, and that sort of ignited his career at Everton, I thought, and he went on to be the
01:02
youngest captain of the club as well. But away from football, he's the founder of Chop Value,
01:07
and it's a very interesting and sustainable business. What they do is they collect used
01:11
chopsticks from restaurants and convert them into homeware and furniture, sort of the tables and
01:16
chopping boards, things like that. So obviously, things are going well for them, and he's been
01:21
included in this list, and it seems that his business career has made a similar start to his
01:25
football career. So, I believe you've got a bit more for us on the list. Yeah, of course. So,
01:30
another names on the list is Robert Oates, and Robert, he founded ArbTech, which is an ecological
01:36
surveyors in 2005, and then despite the 2008 financial crash and the pandemic, he's managed
01:42
to grow it in that time, and now it's turning over quite an impressive amount with over 150
01:48
specialists working for him. And something that I couldn't reveal when writing the 42 into 42 feature
01:55
was that ArbTech's now been snapped up by Selnor, and that really is a great partnership for them
02:01
right on the brink of their 20th anniversary. And Rob, quite rightly, said he's never been
02:05
more excited for the future. I know. I believe you've got a property story for us. I do. So,
02:10
plans have been given the green light for an LGBTQ plus extra care housing scheme in
02:15
south Manchester. So, this scheme is sort of a first of its kind. It's actually a welcome and
02:20
inclusive space for sort of the older members of that community, and the residents will be aged
02:25
over 55 at the site of the former spy hospital on Russell Road, which was demolished in 2019,
02:32
but it's been vacant since then. So, Ian McKellen, the famous actor we might all be familiar with,
02:37
yep, LGBT foundation patron, he visited the site earlier this year, and he said, you know, what a
02:42
wonderful scheme this is. The building will consist of 80 one- and two-bedroom apartments,
02:48
and construction can begin now because it's been granted approval by Manchester City Council. It
02:53
was given approval last Thursday. No, fantastic. So, I understand you've got one more story for
02:57
us before we sign off. Yeah, so going down to Wales, we've got a story that was inside the
03:02
up-and-coming issue of Wales Business Insider that I believe is almost ready to come out,
03:07
and it's from Mallows Beauty. I'm not sure if you heard of that. I'm not sure if you're big
03:11
sort of skincare person. I'm not, actually, but yeah, go on. It was founded by Laura Mallows four
03:16
years ago, and she told Douglas Freedly, the editor down there, that she's looking to hit a turnover
03:24
of sales of about 50 million, which is quite an ambitious target. I think at the minute, they're
03:28
set for 6 million turnover this year, and it's expected to double to around 11, 12 region next
03:35
year, but with the external investment from the Development Bank of Wales, I think that's about
03:42
a £1 million figure. The future's looking bright for them, I think. They should be able to hit that.
03:48
Sounds like the future is looking very bright there. So, that's all from us today. To find
03:52
out more about these stories, you can visit our website, insidermedia.com,
