00:00Jean-Noël Barreau has had a meteoric rise in the world of French politics.

00:05Having studied at top institutions like France's ACHE-EUX-SES and the Massachusetts Institute

00:11of Technology in the United States, the 41-year-old economist launched his political career in

00:162015 and became an MP in 2017.

00:20He later joined President Macron's Renaissance Party and held positions such as digital minister

00:25and junior minister for Europe.

00:27Barreau was no stranger to the world of foreign relations to begin with, given his father,

00:32Jacques Barreau, was vice-president of the European Commission.

00:36Europe remains a key priority for France's new government.

00:40One of the biggest issues the new foreign minister will continue to grapple with is

00:44the question over the future of Ukraine.

00:47This is what Barreau said about Kyiv's bid to join the European Union when he spoke to

00:51France 24.

00:52We have a very clear vision that the future of Ukraine is in Europe.

01:03And there are certain reforms which Ukraine must implement to bring it closer to the European

01:07rule of law.

01:12This new enlargement process must be accompanied by a reform of the EU and its policies.

01:18Jean-Noël Barreau will make his debut on the world stage next week, when he attends

01:30the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
