There are many things that you can categorize our producer Joe
00:08
Frizzo here on the early line as a producer extraordinaire, the
00:13
stat man, a witty guy. How about a tennis aficionado that joins
00:17
us here bright and early on this Monday on the opening day of
00:21
action at the final Grand Slam this year in tennis at the US
00:25
Open. Frizzo, happy to have you here on this Monday on the early
00:29
line. Happy to be on. I mean, people were saying, I know Donny
00:32
told me before the show, why is this a 924, not 824? We moved it
00:36
back up to the right in the middle of the show or where I
00:38
belong.
00:40
I mean, almost listen, almost, almost got rid of seven and
00:44
seven just to do this segment to lead off today. But we got to
00:47
get you ready for the final Grand Slam up in Flushing.
00:51
Frizzo, let's start on the men's side. Carlos Alcaraz has won the
00:55
last two Grand Slam titles at the French Open on the clay and
00:59
at Wimbledon earlier this summer. He enters as the
01:02
favorite at a short two to one price. He did lose the Novak
01:06
Djokovic over in the Paris Olympic Games. Djokovic taken
01:10
home the first gold medal of his career to add to the golden
01:14
Grand Slam. Now that is complete and Alcaraz did lose in his first
01:19
match in Cincinnati in the tune up event here for the United
01:23
States Open. Where do you think Carlos Alcaraz is entering the
01:27
tournament up in Queens?
01:29
He's got to be the favorite. I mean, he is the favorite. He's
01:31
the rightful favorite, in my opinion. He's my personal pick.
01:34
He has actually had, I think the US Open has been his best Grand
01:37
Slam. He made the quarterfinals on his debut at 18 years old. He
01:42
made obviously, or he won the title in 2022, last year made
01:45
the semifinals. And just his performance in best of five
01:48
matches has been what sets him apart. He is since he won that
01:51
Grand Slam for the first time in 2022, 42 and three. So that's
01:54
why I give him the edge. He is my favorite for sure. Djokovic
01:58
obviously got the easier half of the draw, which is the
02:00
concern for Alcaraz. He would have to beat either Medvedev or
02:02
Sinner before beat Djokovic in the final. But yeah, I think
02:05
he's a rightful favorite at the top. He is my pick. I've been
02:07
burned by Djokovic as you well know, you know, over and over
02:10
this year. I'm not doing this this tournament. I'm going
02:12
Alcaraz to beat Djokovic in the final.
02:15
Joe, we take a look at the top three listed odds wise here at
02:17
the FanDuel Sportsbook. Alcaraz, Djokovic and Sinner. Then you
02:20
have Zverev, Medvedev and Rublev. Talk about an American
02:23
tennis player, Taylor Fritz, 60 to one to win this competition.
02:27
Can we at least get American maybe into the semifinals or the
02:30
quarterfinals? And what's the options here for some of the
02:32
American guys here?
02:34
Yeah, so Taylor Fritz is for sure the best American player in
02:38
terms of the odds. But I mean, you have a bunch of depth there.
02:41
Francis Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, they will likely play in round
02:44
three. The winner would play Djokovic most likely, which
02:46
would be an incredible match. I like Ben Shelton as a sleeper.
02:48
Djokovic is hurt. You never know. I think Shelton could
02:51
actually be the guy that gets hot. The conditions can favor
02:53
him. There is a bet on FanDuel I saw two Americans in the
02:56
semifinals. I believe on FanDuel, there's no gender
02:59
attached to this. It looks like it's men's or women's just get
03:02
two of the eight semifinals at plus 650. I actually like that a
03:05
lot. Most likely to come from the women's side. But on the
03:07
men's side, this is the best chance we've had. There has not
03:10
been an American man to win the US Open since 2003. Not an
03:13
American man to win the Grand Slam since the 2003 US Open and
03:16
Andy Roddick. So Tommy Paul, I like he could play center in
03:19
round four. Shelton, Tiafoe and Fritz is obviously the best
03:22
chance there for sure.
03:23
The stat man and the tennis aficionado delivering both right
03:27
then and there. Frieza, let's go to the women's draw, whereas it
03:31
might feel a little bit more up in the air over at the US Open.
03:35
The defending champ, an American in Coco Gauff, but she's got the
03:38
fourth best number now at 12 to 1, followed by another American
03:42
rounding out the top five and Jessica Bagula at 14 to 1. The
03:45
favorite, Irina Sabalenka at a plus 210 number. What are your
03:49
thoughts about the women's draw for the US Open?
03:53
So the women's tournament obviously is open, usually more
03:55
open than the men's side for sure. But it's especially been
03:57
the case at the US Open. Five of the last seven US Open women's
04:01
champions have been first time Grand Slam winners. That's why
04:04
I'm going with Mira Andreeva as my as my favorite to win the
04:06
title. Someone off the board, not off the board, she has the
04:09
sixth best odds, but 17 years old, performed well in Paris,
04:12
beat Sabalenka there, almost beat Iga in Cincinnati last
04:15
week. I like her. Talking about the top of the tournament, Coco
04:18
has really, really struggled this year. Obviously, the
04:20
letdown in Paris, she was one and two in Cincinnati and
04:23
Canada. So really not the form you want for the defending
04:25
champ. Sabalenka is the rightful favorite. She's the best
04:28
hardcore player in the world. And then Iga has won this
04:30
tournament before. I would really lean towards, you know,
04:33
Sabalenka as the favorite. I think Svantek's got a chance,
04:36
but I'm going to go with Andreeva to be my kind of
04:39
sleeper, dark horse, you know, 21 to 1 champion.
04:42
Andreeva 21 to 1 right there. You saw Joe Frizzo's US Open
04:47
watchlist. Let's flash it up once again, so we can go
04:50
through the picks. Frizzo, take us through quickly here, all of
04:52
these selections.
04:54
Alcarez to win the title over Djokovic. I like that. That will
04:57
be a stiff Grand Slam. Andreeva, as I mentioned, to win the
04:59
women's title. Shelton is a sleeper. I think he could get
05:02
hot. Maybe the draw opens up. Diane Schneider, I like her.
05:05
She's actually had a very nice season this year. And then
05:08
today, Chris Eubanks to win his match, some plus money, a plus
05:11
126 in the first round.
05:13
The tall, lanky American Christopher Eubanks. Joe Frizzo,
05:17
thank you so much. Are you counting us out? No, that's
05:20
Matt, our director here on this Monday. Frizzo, thank you very
05:24
much. More on the early line next.
