Showers and storms for the south-west of Australia

Warm temperatures are expected for much of the country.

00:00Hello from the Bureau. It's Wednesday the 21st of August. We're going to look at the weather for the back half of this week.

00:06For the remainder of today, things looking reasonably settled across the country.

00:10We can see a big ridge of high pressure covering most of the continent, clear skies across the central parts of the country.

00:16That's really helping to bring the temperatures up and that's going to be a bit of a weather story for the next week or so.

00:21We'll get to that towards the end.

00:23We can see a bit of a lingering shower around the southeast of the country and as well

00:27around the southwest and a bit of a line of showers coming in this evening to the southeast of the country.

00:32It's not going to do much in terms of significant rainfall totals

00:35but it will keep that shower activity going through the exposed parts of SA, Vic and Tasmania.

00:40As we move into tomorrow, we can see a low pressure system move towards southwestern parts of WA there.

00:46Showers on the forecast for Perth from the morning period and as the low moves closer to the southwest

00:53during the afternoon and evening, do have a thunderstorm on the forecast for southern suburbs of Perth

00:58down to the southwestern capes of WA there.

01:01There's quite a bit of wind aloft with this system.

01:03We could see some of that drag down with some of the heavier showers and thunderstorms that are on the forecast.

01:08You'll need to keep an eye on the radar and our forecast as we get into tomorrow.

01:14Across in the east of the country for the rest of Thursday, you can see we do have a big ridge of high pressure

01:19keeping things largely pretty settled, although we do have the chance of a thunderstorm on the forecast

01:23around the Vic NSW border as well as up in the northeast of NSW.

01:28As we move into Friday, we can see this low start to move across the Bight.

01:32It does a couple of things with that.

01:34So it starts to concentrate some of the temperatures over the central parts of the country

01:38and begin to drag them down towards the south and southeast ahead of the weekend.

01:42I'll show you some of that temperature information in just a moment.

01:46By the time we get to later parts of Friday, we can see some of the shower activity associated with this trough

01:52pick up through southern parts of NSW, Vic and Tasmania,

01:55as well as another trough crossing southwestern parts of WA,

01:59keeping that shower and thunderstorm activity going a little bit longer.

02:03Now, as we move into late Friday, we can see a cold front sitting offshore of WA there.

02:08We're expecting that one to cross southwestern parts of WA on the Saturday.

02:13It's probably looking like the most significant system for that part of the world in the short to medium term.

02:18Likely we'll end up with some severe weather as this system crosses,

02:21so it'll be important to keep abreast of forecasts and warnings as we get closer to the time with that one.

02:26Now, I promised I'd talk about temperatures. We'll do that now.

02:29We can see temperatures across large parts of the country above average for this time of year,

02:34especially central parts of the country as we move into tomorrow.

02:38Now, as we move into Friday, as that low transits across the Bight,

02:41we can see some of these temperatures raise up just a little bit and move further south,

02:45so northern parts of South Australia here really bearing the brunt of those warmer temperatures on the Friday,

02:50and that trend continues into the weekend as these temperatures get dragged further to the southeast,

02:56with some August maximum temperature records potentially under threat in that part of the world over the weekend.
