00:34A major wildfire continued to rage in the northern suburbs of Athens on Monday.

00:39It has triggered evacuations in several areas after firefighters warned that homes, businesses

00:44and schools were under threat.

00:47Authorities say the fires broke out in 40 different locations, and that efforts of firefighters

00:51and water-dropping planes are being hampered by swirling winds.

00:57More than 700 firefighters, backed by 27 special wildfire teams and armed forces personnel

01:03were battling the flames.

01:05At least 18 people have been injured, mostly due to smoke inhalation, as the blaze that

01:10started on Sunday reached outlying sections of a suburb about 15 kilometers from the city

01:15center.

01:17The wildfire raced through pine forests, left tinder dry by repeated heat waves this summer.

01:24Wildfires are frequent in Greece, but authorities have said climate change is fueling bigger

01:29and more frequent blazes.

01:33U.S. defense officials have ordered a guided-missile submarine and large aircraft carrier to be

06:43Around 150 hectares of forest and pastures in the Suteška National Park are currently

06:48on fire.

07:06Meanwhile, Albanian firefighters battered flames in the town of Finik on Monday as fires

07:20continue to rage in at least 11 remote mountainous ports in the region.

07:25Fire teams were seen using helicopters and water hoses to control the flames within the

07:30mountains of the town, located 255 kilometers south of the capital, Tirana.

07:37The Albanian Defense Ministry reported that flames in the dry mountain along the border

07:42with North Macedonia to the east had been ongoing for a week.
