Learning Support Assistants receive new training program

Learning Support Assistants in the ACT will have access to a new training program to help them support students with disabilities and learning challenges.

00:00Welcome to Evelyn Scott School. We're really excited today to be announcing our first learning

00:14support assistant program here in the ACT. It's the first of its kind in Australia and

00:19it supports learning support assistants to be able to learn and create a career out of

00:24providing support to young people in our schools. We've released an inclusion strategy which

00:29means that we want to make sure that all of our staff, not just teachers and school

00:33leaders but including learning support assistants, have what they need to be able to support

00:37students who might have a disability or learn differently in our ACT public schools.

00:47Providing the universal learning for LSAs is a really good resource because it means

00:53that we can work with other people that are working in similar roles in other schools.

00:58We can consolidate our learning and we can learn tips and tricks to help all of our diverse

01:04learners wherever they need to be. Just like students are individuals, the needs of those

01:09individuals change. So we may have students with disabilities that might need specialist

01:15training for their medical or personal care. We may have students with trauma backgrounds

01:21that need trauma-informed practices and we can also help students with low literacy,

01:27low numeracy or any other needs that they do have in their classes.
