Australian Alps, the liquid heart of the country

00:00Water is an important part of every ecosystem on the planet,

00:04but it's especially critical here in the high country.

00:09A new film, Liquid Heart, restoring the Australian Alps,

00:14shines the spotlight on the shared understanding about water in our mountains.

00:20First Nations storyteller Shane Harrington and mountain ecologists, advocates and scientists

00:27all tell their story of their continuous commitment to regeneration of the high country.

00:34Front and centre is the late Alec Costin, widely regarded as the father of Australian Alpine ecology,

00:43who, mid-last century, led the charge to restore the water catchments of the Snowys,

00:48especially those that have been badly eroded due to grazing.

00:51But Alec has a supporting cast of many others who have followed in his footsteps,

00:58along with the main protagonist, those magnificent mountains,

01:03and all masterfully captured by cinematographer Stephen Curtin.

01:19and in a way, as somebody has said, this is the liquid heart of Australia.
