00:10Air all around us is made up of matter.
00:15Water you drink is also made up of matter.
00:19Your books, your bag, food you eat, clothes you wear are all made up of matter.
00:29Or just everything you see all around is made up of matter.
00:34Definition of matter is matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
00:43Now let's understand this definition.
01:03Let's take an example to prove it.
01:07We learned that everything is made up of matter.
01:10So let's take a few things and see are they made up of matter.
01:16First is water. We have to see if water is made up of matter.
01:22It should have mass and occupy space.
01:26Take an empty tumbler and weigh it.
01:31Now fill it with water and again weigh it.
01:36Which tumbler has more weight?
01:39The filled tumbler has more weight.
01:43It means that water has mass or it has weight.
01:50Now can you add anything to a tumbler which is already full?
01:55No, you cannot add anything to a tumbler which is already full with water or any other liquid.
02:03So it means that water or any liquid occupies space.
02:10So water or any liquid has mass and occupies space.
02:16So it is matter.
02:18Now here is another thing and it is a table.
02:23We have to see if this is made up of matter.
02:26And for that we have to prove it has mass and it occupies space.
02:32Weigh the table. It has weight.
02:36Now can you place another table at the same place where a table is already there?
02:45No, you cannot. So table occupies space.
02:53So table or any solid object has mass and occupies space.
02:59So it is made up of matter.
03:04Now we will see whether air is made up of matter.
03:09And in order to prove that air is made up of matter,
03:14we should be able to prove that air has mass and occupies space.
03:20Now take an empty balloon and weigh it.
03:25Now fill the same balloon with air and again weigh it.
03:35Filled balloon will have more weight.
03:38It means that air has mass or it has some weight.
03:43Now let's see if air occupies space.
03:47Now which balloon occupies more space?
03:51An empty balloon or a filled balloon?
03:55A filled balloon occupies more space so it means that air occupies space too.
04:03So air has mass and occupies space.
04:07So we can say air is made up of matter.
04:11So kids, now we know matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
04:19And everything around us, including the air, is made of matter.
04:27Now we will see what is matter made up of.
04:32Matter is made up of tiny microscopic particles called molecules.
04:40And further molecules are made up of atoms.
04:44The density and the space between particles of matter determine what type of matter it is.
04:52A solid, a liquid or a gas.
05:01So states of matter can be solid, liquid or gaseous
05:08depending on the density and the space between the particles of the matter.
05:15Now we will learn about the different states of matter.
05:20Solid, liquid and gas.
05:25First, let's learn about the solid state of matter.
05:30The matter that is a solid state like wooden objects, plastic objects and steel objects.
05:40The particles are very tightly packed and cannot move at all.
05:45And so that is why solid objects cannot change shape and remain in the same shape
05:53unless large force is applied on a solid object to make it change its shape.
06:03Next, we have liquids.
06:07Liquid objects like water, juice, milk or just any liquid particles are loosely packed and can move.
06:18And this is why liquid objects can change their shape.
06:23Example, water takes the shape of the container we pour it into.
06:30And if we pour water in a glass, shape of water is same as that of the glass.
06:37If you pour the same water in a bowl, it will take the shape of a bowl.
06:41And if you spill water on the floor, it will again change its shape.
06:49This is all because the particles in a liquid object are loosely packed and they can move freely.
06:59Now, third form of matter is gaseous state.
07:04In gaseous objects like air, perfumes, steam, particles are very very loosely packed.
07:14Even much more loose than the liquid and can move very freely.
07:21And so that is why gaseous objects do not have any shape.
07:26They take the shape of their container.
07:30What is the shape of air in this room?
07:35It is the same as that of the room.
07:39What is the shape of air in this balloon?
07:43It is same as that of the balloon.
07:47And so that is why gaseous objects do not have any shape.
07:52They take the shape of their container.
07:55And they do not have even a fixed volume.
07:59The particles are very loosely packed and they are free to move.
