Young participants proudly present their poddy calves at the annual Alice Springs Show.

00:03The first competition at the Alice Springs show was devoted to the future of the beef

00:07industry.

00:08The day prior, a cattle handling class had helped the young entrants prep, but come show

00:11day it was time for the competitors, and their potty calves, to shine.

00:15Looking for kids that are probably just a little bit above the others in the fact that

00:19they look with the judge and they're pretty switched on about how to show their animal

00:24out, and some of those kids at such a young age are doing a fantastic job doing that,

00:27so it's really exciting, you know, for the beef industry to have that sort of involvement

00:32coming from station kids is a great thing going forward, so yeah, really tough class

00:36to judge, and all of them deserve the ribbons that they've got.

00:38Yeah, and why do you think classes like this are so important?

00:41Oh, it's the future of the beef industry, isn't it, like, you know, we're all getting

00:44older every year, so as the young ones come on, and they enjoy doing what they're doing,

00:49you want to keep them involved with it, so these sort of events are great for them for

00:53encouragement, meeting friends, having fun, all light-minded kids, and they certainly,

00:58you know, they'll come away from here with experiences that they won't forget.

01:02As extra incentive, one entrant in the junior competition, made up of handlers and judges,

01:06had the chance to win a bold new Cherele Heffer, donated by the Fogden family.

01:10This is our sweet little Yuwali, she's just a little baby, we brought her into the yards

01:16a month or so ago for this purpose, for a little kid up here to win her, and hopefully

01:24it can help them in their journey, I guess lots of kids, not many will probably have

01:28Cherele's up here, but they're definitely a beautiful crossbred, so they'll fit right

01:33in for whatever breed their families have.
