00:00Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need to reduce wasteful spending,
00:07including reducing surplus subsidies to lower the government's debt level.
00:12However, he did not put a time line to abolish the fuel subsidy.
00:18So I concede, things need to be done, but it has to be done judiciously.
00:24The Malaysian government spends most of the fuel and cooking oil for the people.
00:29A step that is expected to swallow the cost of Rp 81 billion last year.
00:34Anwar tried to replace the wide-ranging subsidies with large aid this year
00:39to help efforts to reduce the spending deficit of 2024 from 5% in 2023
00:46to 4.3% from the output in the rough country.
00:51Although the reform will strengthen the country's pull in terms of investment,
00:56it is at risk of undermining Anwar's popularity since taking over state administration at the end of 2022.
