00:00The Federal Court has denied a request by the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council
00:06and three others to revisit a 2018 ruling that held the unilateral conversion of minor children
00:11unconstitutional. In a unanimous decision, a three-member Apex Court panel rejected an application
00:17for leave to challenge a ruling handed down by the Court of Appeal in favour of single mother
00:22Loh Siu Hong in January this year. Chief Justice Tengku Memon Tuan Mat said the ruling in M Indira
00:28Gandhi's case handed down by a five-member Apex Court bench was good law, adding that there was
00:32no reason to revisit the case. Today's verdict also meant that the Court of Appeal ruling on
00:37January 10th to annul a provision in the Perlis state enactment allowing unilateral conversions
00:42was upheld as it contradicts Article 12 Sub 4 of the Federal Constitution. She said the English text
00:48of the Federal Constitution that states parents in Article 12 Sub 4 meant the consent of both
00:53parents was needed to convert a minor to Islam. Samuel Chua, FMT News.
