00:00 Mohit Jaiwal, a 24-year-old, repeats the same action several times a day.
00:05 He is amongst the 90% of unemployed young Indians who hold several jobs in the informal
00:09 sector to support themselves financially.
00:12 He is a farmer in the morning and in the afternoon, he sells sugarcane juice on the streets.
00:18 I could not get a job, so I thought about doing something else.
00:21 After all, I need to survive.
00:24 Everyone is trying to do something of their own.
00:26 We are either farmers, someone is running a rickshaw, no one here has got a job in the
00:30 last 10 years.
00:31 The lack of jobs have affected people from all economic classes in India.
00:40 In New Delhi, Faraz, a former engineering student, gave up his studies because he feared
00:45 he would not find a job in this sector.
00:47 He now spends his days studying for a government job, aiming to secure a lifelong career as
00:52 a civil servant.
00:53 This aspiration comes with its share of challenges.
00:56 Even within the government sector, since the number of vacancies are fluctuating a lot,
01:02 both in the central and the state services, there is a level of uncertainty here as well,
01:07 which makes us apprehensive about job opportunities in the government sector as well.
01:13 Competition to become a civil servant spears.
01:16 Out of over one million applicants each year, only 5,000 are successful.
01:21 For economist Arun Kumar, India's unemployment problem is resulting in the mass emigration
01:26 of young Indians.
01:28 The Indians are wanting to go to the advanced countries, whether it be US, UK, France, Germany,
01:34 etc.
01:35 You see the queues outside Canadian embassies and outside Australia's high commission, youth
01:42 wanting to go there because they are not getting proper work here.
01:45 So employment generation is a huge issue.
01:48 In the lead up to the polls, a survey by India's Centre for the Study of Developing Societies
01:55 found that half of the 966 million voters are concerned about the unemployment in the
02:00 country.
02:00 country.
