00:00
A tropical cyclone has been named in the Gulf of Carpentaria this afternoon.
00:04
It is a Category 1 system, tropical cyclone Lincoln, and over the next 6 to 12 hours it's
00:10
going to make its way onshore onto the Northern Territory and it will eventually lose tropical
00:16
cyclone status.
00:17
If we zoom in to the north of the country, this is the Gulf here between North Queensland
00:22
and the NT, we can see a lot of moisture, a lot of cloud in the water vapour satellite
00:25
imagery and we can see a bit of circulation as well which is spinning around the Category
00:30
1 tropical cyclone which is in the south western Gulf.
00:34
It's only going to be a short lived cyclone though, later on Friday afternoon around 4
00:39
or 5 o'clock Northern Territory time, Central Standard Time, we're expecting this tropical
00:44
cyclone to cross over the coastline and start to make its way onto land.
00:48
Once it does get onto the land it is going to pretty quickly become a tropical low and
00:54
then through the course of the weekend this tropical low is going to work on a westward
00:58
trajectory across the Northern Territory bringing some areas of quite heavy rain through these
01:02
central places.
01:03
We'll talk more about rain in a second but firstly a look at the tropical cyclone warning
01:07
showing areas likely to see gale force winds during this afternoon's crossing.
01:12
The warning zone is this orange area here, we can zoom in a touch further and see it
01:16
covers some parts of far northwest Queensland, here from Mornington Island up to the border
01:21
which is this straight line here and into the Northern Territory where the tropical
01:25
cyclone warning extends up to Bingbong and that includes Borrolula.
01:29
Gale force winds are expected here through Friday afternoon and evening and even more
01:34
broadly we have a severe weather warning covering a larger area of northwest Queensland and
01:39
northeast Northern Territory throughout this yellow region.
01:43
Later on Friday and potentially early on Saturday afternoon we could see damaging wind gusts
01:47
and heavy to locally intense rainfall.
01:51
Speaking of rain, let's track the path through the middle of the Northern Territory over
01:54
the next couple of days, Saturday, Sunday, it's going to move westwards out towards that
01:59
western border with WA and over the course of the weekend quite significant rainfall
02:04
expected and you'll see that the heaviest rain is on the southern flank of the moving
02:09
tropical cyclone or tropical low, meaning the heaviest rain likely to go between Tennant
02:14
Creek and Elliott where we could see daily rainfall totals of 50 to 100 mm as the widespread
02:20
values in isolated areas getting upwards of 150 or possibly even 200 mm over a 24 hour
02:26
period through the central parts of the NT and some northern parts of Queensland as well.
02:32
Because of all this incoming rainfall there is a broad array of flood watches, all the
02:36
rivers through these purple areas could see a flood response as those river levels do
02:41
rise with the incoming rainfall.
02:44
Now of particular note, some of these areas in north west Queensland are still experiencing
02:48
flooding from the exceptionally heavy rain over the past couple of weeks associated with
02:52
ex-tropical cyclone Kerala.
02:54
Flood waters are still easing through some of these places but with the further incoming
02:58
rainfall, renewed rises are possible.
03:00
This could be of particular concern around Birktown and Domergy where many roads are
03:04
shut and some communities are still isolated.
03:08
So stay up to date throughout the course of Friday and the weekend.
03:11
You can find the latest weather and warnings at the Bureau website and app, and as always,
03:15
through severe weather, do listen to all advice from local emergency management.
03:19
Stay safe and thanks for watching.
