00:00 After a wet, windy, even wild starts to the year,
00:03 what does the first weekend of 2024 have in store?
00:07 The answer, something calmer, something drier,
00:11 and something a little bit colder.
00:13 Now, it doesn't look much drier with low pressure systems
00:15 dominating the scene on Friday.
00:17 But what happens is high pressure to the south,
00:19 high pressure to the north merge together
00:21 and push away those low pressure systems.
00:23 The high takes over, the ice bars open up,
00:26 meaning the winds will be fairly light.
00:29 But as well as turning drier with high pressure,
00:31 meaning the air is sinking, it will also be turning colder.
00:35 If we rewind and look at that again
00:37 with the temperature profile on,
00:39 you can see reasonably mild conditions
00:41 to start with through Friday.
00:42 But as we go through the weekend,
00:44 colder air seeps in from the north.
00:47 So it will be turning noticeably chillier
00:50 during both Saturday and Sunday,
00:52 with more in the way of nighttime frosts.
00:54 And that is likely to continue well into next week.
00:57 Let's go through the weekend then,
00:59 breaking it down day by day.
01:00 With high pressure and light winds,
01:02 we will have a frost across many northern areas
01:04 to start the weekend.
01:06 Not going to be completely dry,
01:07 a few showers drifting down through the Irish Sea
01:09 into north and west Wales.
01:11 Showers likely to continue over the far north of Scotland
01:14 through the mainland and the Northern Isles,
01:15 where it'll also be fairly breezy.
01:17 There'll be some stubborn areas of cloud around too,
01:20 most likely over the Midlands and eastern England.
01:22 And they could provide one or two showers
01:24 here and there also.
01:25 But for the vast majority, it will be dry.
01:28 And I'm reasonably hopeful that much of Northern Ireland,
01:30 southern Scotland, a good part of Wales,
01:32 and southwest England will see some lengthy spells of sunshine.
01:36 For most as well, the winds will be light.
01:38 But there could be a bit of a brisk breeze blowing
01:41 across East Anglia and the far southeast,
01:43 certainly likely over northern Scotland.
01:45 And it is going to be cold, even where it's sunny.
01:48 Temperature's only five or six degrees, maybe eight or nine
01:51 across the far south.
01:52 Fairly close to average for the time of year,
01:54 but colder certainly than it has been,
01:57 and feeling colder where it does stay windy.
01:59 Notice the ice bars stay fairly close together
02:01 across the southeast, even into Sunday,
02:04 even as that high pressure starts to build in.
02:07 So again, here there'll be a fairly brisk wind.
02:10 But with that high pressure dominating, again,
02:13 most places are looking dry.
02:14 Even the showers over the Northern Isles of Scotland
02:16 should start to ease.
02:18 Again, it's not going to be blue sky everywhere.
02:20 There will be some stubborn, cloudier zones,
02:22 particularly through the Midlands,
02:24 parts of eastern England.
02:25 And there could also be some stubborn fog patches,
02:28 light winds, high pressure, and saturated ground.
02:33 It does mean fog is going to become more of an issue
02:35 over the next few days.
02:37 And the time of year, it could be a bit tricky for it
02:39 to clear away.
02:40 So some stubborn fog patches, but again,
02:42 many central and western areas dry and bright
02:44 with decent spars of sunshine.
02:45 Certainly most areas will be dry, even if it's cloudy.
02:49 Where it is cloudy, though, temperatures
02:51 could struggle to get much above four or five
02:53 Celsius on Sunday.
02:54 So again, colder still than Saturday.
02:57 And that brisk wind across East Anglia and the southeast
03:00 will make it feel colder still.
03:02 These are the feels like temperatures.
03:04 So just one or two degrees, how it could feel on Sunday.
03:07 So yes, it will feel noticeably colder with the frost returning
03:11 on Sunday night.
03:13 So the weather is calming down, thankfully.
