Scottish port feels force of Brexit storm

Promises of prosperity clash with the harsh post-Brexit reality for the UK fishing industry, as explained by Mark Addison, a fishing boat owner. He highlights problems like long queues, passport and paperwork issues, and challenges with transporting fresh fish, particularly in lorries. This situation is particularly felt in Peterhead, Scotland, which is Europe's largest whitefish market.

00:12 I would say I was on the fence with Brexit.
00:14 It was a lot of
00:16 pro-Brexit at the
00:18 time. Not so
00:20 much against.
00:22 Now it's reality.

00:26 Careful what you wish for,
00:28 not so good, but it hasn't turned out like they promised.
00:54 There's been issues with queues, passports, paperwork, groupage in the
01:03 lorries. There's always been a something which is a big problem with a fresh
01:09 produce like fish. If it's held back a day, it's a problem. It's a day less shelf life.
01:17 In the first few months, there was a huge number of problems. Exporting of seafood
01:37 dropped by about 80%. A lot of that has now recovered as systems have been sort
01:42 of refined a bit and fishermen have sort of worked out how to operate
01:48 with these new systems. But it's cost them. It does cost them more money.
01:52 They've lost customers. Their profits have been reduced and
01:57 certainly a number of businesses have closed down as a result.
02:02 The vast majority of fishermen have seen very little if no increase in quota.
02:21 We also have a situation where along the south coast of England, fishermen were
02:27 promised that the area out to 12 miles would be just exclusively for UK boats.
02:33 That's not the case either. In fact, EU boats are still allowed to come within
02:38 six miles of the shore and that particularly upset the fishing industry as well.
02:43 You get your distant friends every day coming to say hi.
