S. Korea reports 1,092 new COVID-19 cases, suspends UK flights

Our starting point tonight: South Korea has become the latest to join the 50 plus nations to ban flights from UK after the identification of a new, mutant coronavirus strain there. The measures will be in effect until the year's end.
This as the nation added more than one thousand new Covid-19 infections today and 17 deaths.

On Wednesday, South Korea confirmed an additional one-thousand-ninety-two cases of COVID-19 a jump back above a thousand for the first time since Sunday.
All but 32 of Wednesday's cases were transmitted locally.
Seoul alone had the most at 3-hundred-seventy-three cases... followed by almost 3-hundred in Gyeonggi-do Province,... so the greater capital region accounts for some 70 percent of all Wednesday's cases.
Across the country, there are large cluster infections at religious facilities and nursing homes.
To stop the virus from spreading during the year-end holidays, the government has banned most gatherings until January 3rd.
"In view of this critical situation, we strongly advise everyone not to hold gatherings with more than five people. And in the central region, such gatherings have been banned by local authorities."
Skating rinks, ski resorts and popular tourist spots are also closed.
And to stop the new, more transmissible variant of COVID-19 from southeast England, South Korea is joining other countries in stopping flights from the UK until the end of the year, and will take other measures after that.
"From today until December 31st, we are temporarily stopping all flights from the UK. We will also stop issuing isolation exemptions for UK travelers, who will all have to self-isolate for 14 days and take additional PCR tests after their isolation."
When flights resume, the temperature threshold for having to isolate will be lowered from 37-point-5 degrees Celsius... to 37-point-3 degrees, and all flight attendants will be preemptively tested.
