The World Health Organization says Europe's daily COVID-19 infection rate has increased by more than 30-percent.
The daily death toll on the continent has risen nearly 40-percent compared to the previous week.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
According to the WHO's spokeswoman Dr. Margaret Harris on Tuesday,... a number of European countries,... including France, Spain and the U.K., account for the majority of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases,... jumping more than 30-percent.
She added that daily COVID-19 deaths rose nearly 40-percent compared to the previous week.
Among the European countries seeing the biggest spike is Italy,... which reported 221 fatalities in the past 24 hours.
That's the highest since mid May.
Despite its new restriction measures,... including the 6PM closure of bars and restaurants,... the country continues to see a high number of infections,... reporting nearly 22-thousand on Tuesday.
France reported 523 new deaths on the same day,... the highest since April.
Harris says the effectiveness of the new restrictions could be analyzed in two weeks time,... as there's a "lag".
On whether the second wave will be worse than the first one,... she said it'll be a "different sort of peak",... suggesting the overall death toll may not be as bad as the initial outbreak.
The second wave in the U.S. also continues to increase at an alarming rate.
According to Johns Hopkins University,... nearly half a million Americans tested positive in the past week.
37 states are now reporting at least 10-percent more new cases in the past week,... while 21 states saw their highest seven-day averages.
In addition,... 29 states reported at least one record high day of new cases during the month of October.
In Iran,... hospitals in many provinces are running out of beds as health authorities there say one person every five minutes dies of the virus.
However, some experts doubt the country's official death toll,... as another report by the Iranian parliament's research center suggests the death toll could be twice as high as that announced by the health ministry.
The report said Iran's official figures are based only on the number of deaths reported in hospitals.
