S. Korea develops new greenhouse to grow ginseng even in harsh weather

A type of new greenhouse has been developed and is being tested by the South Korean government.
Experts say the new facility can boost the nation's ginseng production despite harsh weather conditions.

While this may look like most ordinary greenhouses seen in rural areas, it's actually a bit different.
It's a new type of greenhouse developed by the Rural Development Administration to cultivate ginseng.
Unlike conventional greenhouses, a wall of special film sits between its outer metallic edge and shading net, creating an extra layer of protection to counter extreme heatwaves.
It also has a ventilator that discharges hot air.
Experts say this system can reduce the indoor farm's temperature by three to five degrees Celsius.
Additionally, this greenhouse has a higher ceiling, allowing workers to carry out their daily duties more comfortably without having to bend down all day.
"The facility is managed by an eco-friendly system that is easy to control, so it feels just like working outdoors. As you can see, sprouts are all alive and well."
The special film can be closed and opened depending on the amount of sunlight the greenhouse is exposed to each day...and water can be delivered to the ginseng at any given time.
Recent tests have proven that it helps ginseng roots grow around twenty-eight percent heavier, resulting in an additional thirty to fifty percent of ginseng exports.
"We will continue to work with the agriculture ministry to confirm the demand for the new greenhouse and come up with a plan to deliver it. Ideally, we can start the project by 2022."
When fully commercialized and installed, experts forecast the new greenhouses to help boost ginseng production despite harsh weather conditions, such as heavy downpours, heatwaves and typhoons.
