The Japanese government plans to release more than a million tons of contaminated Fukushima water into the sea.
Japan's local media reports said the release will begin October 2022 at the earliest, and would take decades to complete.
The decision ends years of debate over how to dispose of the liquid that includes water used to cool the power station after it was destroyed by a massive tsunami in 2011.
While the Japanese government has long preferred to release the liquid into the nearby Pacific, environmental activists have expressed strong opposition.
Farmers and fishermen have also voiced fears that the move will destroy their industry.
