The World Health Organization has once again called for rigorous testing on the effectiveness and safety of a COVID-19 vaccine before authorization.
On Friday, the agency said that there is currently no vaccine candidate whose efficacy level in clinical trials has reached above 50 percent the standard sought by the WHO.
It added that widespread COVID-19 vaccinations were not expected until mid-2021.
This comes as several countries, including the U.S. and the U.K., seem to be rushing to release a vaccine, before finishing the late-stage clinical trial.
However, Russia's Sputnik-V, the world's first vaccine, which hasn't gone through Phase three, reportedly shows 100 percent of participants developing antibodies to the new coronavirus.
