In light of the June 10 Pro-Democracy movement, President Moon Jae-in touched upon the need for South Korea to take a leap forward and reach another level of democracy, in terms of the economy and people's daily lives.
"We should head towards a bigger, a more diverse democracy. Democracy as a system has been well developed, allowing us to enforce our rights as citizens in various areas, but now, we need to look back and think if all of us are enjoying democracy in our daily lives."
Speaking at the June 10 commemorative ceremony on Wednesday, Moon applauded the nation for observing the spirit of democracy in the fight against COVID-19, but said that it is now important to make sure the minorities are respected and that the country works toward a sustainable and equal economy.
President Moon also awarded national certificates of merit to citizens who contributed toward Korea's democracy and vowed to continue to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the country and its democracy.
