South Korea will hold a general election next week on April 15th, and today was the last day of early voting. The voter turnout on the first day of the early voting marked an all-time high with over 12 percent. For the latest details from today's early voting, let's connect to our Choi Won-jong.
Won-jong, tell us more.
Yes, Dami, more than 10 million voters were at the early voting polling stations nationwide today to make their voices heard for the 21st general election.
Turnout on Saturday morning was 16-point-46 percent as of 11:30 AM, but the voting rate jumped up to as of 5:50 PM local time, which is the highest percentage ever recorded in early voting history.
The final number of the early voting turnout will be announced today after 6 PM on the National Election Commission's website.
Compared to the previous election, the main difference in early voting this year was the strict disinfecting process for voters.
The National Election Commission has been disinfecting all polling stations nationwide.
Once the voters enter the polling station, authorities check their body temperature and ask them to wear masks and gloves.
Social distancing is another key aspect of the voting process put in place by the South Korean government this year.
When voters wait in line, they are required to stay at least a meter away from each other.
The commission said they have set up eight special polling stations for voters who have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
That's all I have for you now, back to you, Dami.
