The South Korean government and lawmakers from the ruling party have agreed to expand the number of special employment sector workers subject to occupational health and safety insurance from next year.
Meeting at the National Assembly on Monday, the two sides decided to work on making the necessary legislative changes to allow an additional 270 thousand people who work in special employment groups such as onsite service jobs, and freight vehicle drivers, to receive such benefits.
The current law only provides the insurance to some 470,000 special employment workers in nine job sectors, which account for just a quarter of the total 2.2 million people employed in the special employment sector.
The government will pre-announce the legislation of an enforcement ordinance on the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act on Tuesday.
