Victims of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' forced labor ask court to sell firm's frozen assets
  • 5 years ago
Some of the victims of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' forced labor during Japan's colonization of South Korea are pressing a local court to sell off the firm's South Korea-based assets.
The victims' lawyers announced the move earlier Tuesday.
680-thousand U.S. dollars worth of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' patent rights and assets within the country are currently frozen.
The Japanese firm did not follow the Supreme Court's ruling last November, which ordered it to compensate five victims between 85-thousand to 129-thousand dollars each.
Japan insists the issue was resolved when Seoul and Tokyo established diplomatic ties in 1965, but the lawyers say they can't wait any longer as their clients are very elderly.
