National Assembly holds ceremony to mark 100th anniversary of first session of Provisional Assembly
  • 5 years ago
South Korea's National Assembly held a ceremony this morning to mark the 100th anniversary of the first session of the Provisional Assembly.
The Provisional Assembly was established in Shanghai in April 1919 during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
The provisional constitution was enacted,... and they decided to name the nation the Republic of Korea.
National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang said it's time to look back at the past 100 years and see if the National Assembly is living up to the republican and parliamentarism values instilled at the time of the provisional assembly.
He said a paradigm change is needed to open the next century,... starting by reforming the Constitution,... to revamping the imperial presidential system.
Also at the event,... the official seal of the provisional assembly was donated by a relative of Hong Chin -- the last speaker of the exile Assembly.
A similar commemoration will be held on Wednesday night in Shanghai.
