National Assembly to hold event Wednesday to mark S. Korea's 71st Constitution Day

South Korea's National Assembly will hold a ceremony today to mark the country's seventy-first Constitution Day.
Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang will deliver a speech on the day's significance and the need to revise South Korea's decades-old Constitution.
On July 17th, 1948 the country's Constitution was enacted laying the groundwork for South Korea's open democracy.
The Constitution was last revised in 1987 after decades of authoritarian rule.
That's when the country adopted the current direct presidential system,... together with a single, five-year presidential term.
But this system has come under fire as it puts so much power in the hands of the president.
There were discussions to amend the Constitution last year,... but those plans collapsed as political parties couldn't reach a compromise.
