China's first home-built aircraft carrier heads out for sea trial
  • 6 years ago
Chinese state media have shown footage of the country's first home-built aircraft carrier undergoing sea trials.
The vessel, temporarily named Type 001A, left port in the north-eastern city of Dalian on Sunday.
The carrier was launched about a year ago, but has since been fitted with weapons and other equipment.
It is due to go into service by the year 2020 and will become China's second aircraft carrier.
Beijing is trying to modernize its naval fleet to rival the world's leading maritime powers, such as the U.S. Navy.
