Farmer who met Rahul Gandhi commits suicide

On April 28, Surjit Singh, a farmer from Dadu Majra village in Fatehgarh Sahib district, was among those who met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi at the Sirhind grain mandi during the latter’s whirlwind tour of Punjab mandis. On Wednesday, burdened by mounting debts and two failed crops, Singh reportedly committed suicide. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh by the month-end to console families of farmers who committed suicide or migrated to other places in search of livelihood, the party’s state unit said on Thursday.
