The elite men will be off in just over half hour along with some 35,000 fun runners.

Nervous? You bet.It was the night Mo Farah’s career took off – and Chris Thompson was right behind him.

Inside Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium, Farah raced to European 10,000m gold, urging his team-mate on to complete a British one-two. It suggested a rosy future for Thompson but, six years on, it remains a career high.

And while Farah has gone on to conquer the world many times over, Thompson has suffered one injury setback after another. He fractured his back, and damaged a hamstring, in his desperate quest for a medal at London 2012.

The 35-year-old returns to the capital today, chasing another Olympic dream, as he competes in the London Marathon.

He is one of 12 men targeting the 2:14:00 qualifying time which will earn selection to Rio, providing they are also among the top two British finishers. “I absolutely believe I can get one of those places,” he said.

“I believe there’s a performance in me that can shock people and that, if I can stay in one piece until Rio, I can do something magical.”

Like he did in Poland, in 2003, when overtaking Farah at the death to become European Under-23 champion over 5,000m.

“People still don’t believe I once beat Mo,” he added. “But I did.”
