South Korea ferry disaster: another ferry sinks, passengers rescued

Passengers on a ferry near the South Korean island of Hongdo were rescued on Tuesday morning after the vessel ran aground, not far from the site of April’s Sewol ferry tragedy that claimed the lives of at least 294 people.
The ferry, with 109 people — including five crew members — on board, was on a sightseeing trip around the island of Hongdo when it sank at around 9 a.m., about 70 kilometers west of the site where the Sewol ferry capsized in April, AFP reported. Reuters reported that 110 people were on board the vessel.
Everyone on board has been rescued. According to AFP, no injuries were reported. Reuters, however, said three people suffered minor injuries.
After the Sewol ferry tragedy, South Korean President Park Geun-hye broke up the country’s coast guard, which had been accused of being slow and inefficient, and created a new centralized rescue agency.
