Indonesian ferry disaster: Komodo dragon sightseers feared lost after boat sinks
  • 9 years ago
A tourist boat sank over the weekend in Indonesia and as of Sunday night, two foreign tourists are still unaccounted for.

So far five Indonesians and 18 foreign tourists have now been rescued after the boat, which was carrying 20 tourists, a guide and four crew members sank after departing Lombok island on Saturday evening, headed for Komodo island, home of the famed Komodo dragon.

One survivor said the wooden boat may have hit a coral reef at about 6 p.m., causing it to capsize, while one official attributed the accident to stormy weather.

The BBC reported that local fishermen quickly rescued five tourists while a nearby sail boat rescued five others.

As Sunday came to a close, reports said two of the tourists were still missing.

Komodo island’s famous dragons, the world’s largest lizard, are a major tourist draw for holidaymakers in Indonesia. The tourists on the boat that sank hailed from New Zealand, the UK, Spain, Holland, Germany and France.
