This was the terrifying moment an overloaded boat with 29 passengers sunk in a flooded river.

The incident occurred near Koraon town in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh state, India, on September 7.

Eyewitnesses said the boat, which was ferrying people across Belan river, was overloaded.

The crew could not steer with the weight of 29 passengers on board and the boat soon started drifting in the strong current.

Passengers panicked and a few of them jumped into the water upsetting the balance so the boat keeled over and sunk.

A few passengers swam to the shore and many onlookers jumped to the water to save others.

Local police said two passengers were missing. They mounted a search operation and on September 8 found the body of Kailsah Keshri, 34, a vegetable seller from a nearby village.

The search for the other person is still ongoing.

A senior district official, Shivani Singh, said action would be taken against the ferry operators.
